PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mirko Barnett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shung Wung (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Wung's choice of entrance music: Can't Believe. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shung Wung!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barnett looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Wung is fending him off so far but Barnett persists. Nope, Wung circles away and we're back to standing.
Barnett will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Wung closes the distance and clinches.
Come on Wung - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Barnett jumps into guard, dragging Wung to the mat.
Wung trying to control but Barnett is working from the bottom.
Barnett thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Barnett is controlling Wung's posture.
Wung prevents Barnett from getting back to his feet.
Barnett wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Barnett uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Wung has managed to clinch.
Barnett blocks an elbow strike from Wung.

Barnett escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Wung closes the distance and clinches.
Barnett tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Barnett could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Wung breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Wung throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.

and Wung counters by moving into the clinch.
Barnett is trying to break free.

Wung manages to break the clinch.
Wung tries to bum rush Barnett with a series of wild strikes but Barnett uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Barnett looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Wung is fending him off so far but Barnett persists. Nope, Wung circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mirko Barnett. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Wung fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

and Wung counters with a single leg into guard. Barnett didn't expect that.
Barnett has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Barnett is breathing heavily.
Barnett is looking to stand up but Wung isn't so interested in that idea.

Barnett is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Wung wants to sweep here but Barnett controlling him for the moment.

Wung has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Barnett can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Barnett wants to stand but Wung has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Barnett tries to clinch up

and Wung counters with a shoot takedown. Barnett fights it but they end up in guard.
Barnett wants to stand and escape but Wung is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Barnett is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Barnett lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Barnett misses with a knee strike.
Barnett drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Wung gets the underhooks and prevents it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Wung doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Barnett looking to stall.
Barnett using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Wung has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shung Wung dominated that round.
That's time! Barnett's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Wung breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Barnett moves in looking to clinch but Wung pushes him off.
Barnett throws a head kick but Wung moves out of range.
Barnett wants to clinch up but Wung keeps it at a distance.

Wung feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Barnett is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Wung is controlling him.

Barnett wriggles free and stands up.
Wung throws a nice looking combination but Barnett bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Wung will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Barnett looks to clinch

and Wung counters with a takedown into side control.
Wung creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Barnett sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Barnett sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Barnett manages to escape and get back to his feet!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Still in half guard, Barnett seems content to control.
Barnett seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Wung for as long as he can get away with.

Barnett escapes and gets back to his feet.

Barnett drives through and clinches with Wung against the cage.
Wung managing to block the knees to the body from Barnett.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Shung Wung seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wung throws a series of punches but Barnett moves out of range.

Wung gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Mirko Barnett overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Barnett controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Barnett stands up from Wung's guard - Barnett perhaps looking for a knockout.
Barnett throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wung's waist but Barnett gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Barnett off to one side.

Wung moves into range and clinches up with Barnett.
Wung fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Wung has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Barnett clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Barnett is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

Mirko Barnett has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shung Wung.
Wung has momentary wrist control but Barnett slips an elbow through the middle.
Wung is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Barnett dives into side control.

Wung takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Wung is looking to reverse the position.
Wung wants to get back to his feet.

Barnett decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Barnett keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Wung connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Barnett's hands.
Wung lands with a thumping leg kick.
This has been an exciting period of action!
