PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Estrada (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lyoto Machida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Estrada kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is last resort. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Estrada!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lyoto Machida!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Mauricio Rocha and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Estrada scores with a takedown into Machida's guard.
Machida looking to hit a scissor sweep but Estrada is one step ahead there.
Machida has a closed guard, preventing Estrada from standing up.
Machida wants to get back to his feet but Estrada is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Machida really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Estrada. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Estrada throwing strikes but missing.

Machida pulls Estrada in to control the position.

Machida looking for a guillotine here but Estrada defends easily.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Machida lands a nice looking kick to the body. Estrada takes a step back to recover.
Estrada closes this distance looking for a takedown but Machida circles away.

Machida has managed to clinch.

Machida breaks from the clinch.
Machida cracks the inside of Estrada's front leg.

Estrada tries to keep at a distance but Machida has taken the fight into the clinch.

Machida turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Machida manages to end up in side control.
Estrada tries to buck Machida off but Machida is having none of it.
Machida is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Estrada will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Estrada is looking to regain half guard here but Machida keeps moving and retains side control.
Estrada is breathing heavily.
Machida lands a nice forearm strike.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Machida tries to move into full mount but can't pass Estrada's legs.
Machida takes a little break here. Estrada wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Estrada can't do much from the bottom here.
Estrada sneaks back into half guard.
Machida looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Estrada is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Machida controlling the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lyoto Machida dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Machida misses with a few strikes there.
Horrible takedown by Estrada or perhaps it was just good defense by Machida which made him look bad.
Machida connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Estrada's hands.

Machida feints and as Estrada raises his hands in defense, Machida changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Estrada being controlled here, momentarily.
Estrada manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Machida manages to get himself to full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Estrada stops Machida from standing up.

Estrada would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Estrada stands up over Machida, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Estrada slips nicely into half guard.
Estrada seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Machida does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Machida is looking to control Estrada's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Machida avoid being mounted?

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Machida manages to get to full guard.

Machida is pulling down on Estrada's head. It's preventing any offense from Estrada, at least for the moment.

Machida looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Estrada passes into half guard.
Machida wants to get back to his feet.
Estrada controlling the pace.
Estrada not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Estrada is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Machida makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Machida throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Estrada.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Estrada defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Machida.

and Machida counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lyoto Machida showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Machida lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Estrada circles away quickly and effectively.

and Machida decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Estrada's guard.

Estrada is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Machida scores with a couple of nice shots.
Still in half guard, Machida seems content to control.
Lyoto Machida has got the better of the ground game so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Estrada looks like he's trying to stand up.

Machida looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Machida seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Machida prevents Estrada from standing back up.
Machida looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Machida in particular looking to stall.
Estrada wants to control but Machida is keeping busy and won't allow it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Machida.

Lyoto Machida comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Machida has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
