PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jimmy Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cameron Cornell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is Defy You. Jimmy Jones has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Cameron Cornell!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Yves DeLean and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones fails with a takedown attempt.
Cornell swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Jones moves into range and clinches up with Cornell.
Jones with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Cornell has had enough of the clinch but Jones keeps him there for the moment.
Jones misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Cornell.
Jones gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.

Cornell pulls Jones into guard.
Jones will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Cornell controls Jones momentarily but Jones frees himself.
Jones trying to control but Cornell is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cornell working for a triangle but Jones defends it easily.

Jones is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Cornell is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Cornell has escaped and now he's on top!

Cornell decides to return to a standing position.
Jones wants to clinch up but Cornell keeps it at a distance.
Jones misses with a few strikes there.
Nice takedown defense from Jones. No joy for Cornell on that attempt.

Cornell is trying to reverse the position but instead Jones has taken his back - oops!
Cornell manages to reverse the position and now he's in Jones's guard. Nice work there by Cornell.
Cornell wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jones is looking for a triangle but Cornell pushes his legs off easily.
Cornell trying to control the position from guard on top but Jones is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Jones bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Cornell's guard.
Cornell can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Jones controls the pace.
Jones trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Jones is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Jones trying to control but Cornell is working from the bottom.
Cornell is trying to control the position but Jones postures up.
Cornell has Jones pulled in close to control his posture.
Jones stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cornell swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Jones won't allow Cornell to sweep him here.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Jones decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Jones is trying to work for a kimura but Cornell is defending well.

Jones is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Cornell is defending against the submission attempts here by Jones.
Cornell wants to get back to his feet.

Jones seems to be looking for submissions.

Jones looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Cornell is breathing heavily.

Jones is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Jones looking for a submission but Cornell manages to get full guard, putting an end to that submission attempt.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Jones makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Cornell trying to keep a closed guard but Jones is proving a slippery customer.
Cornell might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Jones kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Cornell fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Jones checks it well.

and Cornell counters with a single leg into guard. Jones didn't expect that.
Cornell tries to free his leg and advance position but Jones is retaining full guard.

Jones has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Cornell is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Jones.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cornell decides to stand back up. Cornell steps back and let's Jones get back to his feet.

Cornell is looking to clinch but Jones is avoiding it.

Cornell scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Jones is refusing to be controlled, as Cornell sits in half guard.
Cornell missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

Cornell works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Cornell prevents Jones from improving his position.
Jones lands one or two decent shots to the body here. Although from his own half guard, he's not going to be causing too much damage.

We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Cornell has eaten all the pies!

Jones clinches up with Cornell and pushes him back against the cage.

Jones has momentary wrist control but Cornell slips an elbow through the middle.
Jones wants to improve his position but instead Cornell has moved into half guard.
Jones is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cameron Cornell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!



Jones fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Cornell, pushing him back against the cage.
Cornell is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Jones jumps into guard, dragging Cornell to the mat.
Jones wants to sweep but no luck.
Cornell scoring with punches to the head and body.
Jones keeping moving, preventing Cornell from controlling successfully.

Jones working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Cornell has passed into half guard!

Jones is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Cornell pulls his head out easily.
Jones is looking to improve his position.

Jones is trying to maintain the position but Cornell is very close to passing his half guard.

Jones looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Cornell pushes past his half guard into mount!
Jones bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Cornell takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Jones is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Cornell can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Cornell wants to control but Jones is having none of it.

Jimmy Jones overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Jones is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Cornell is just riding it out for now. Jones eventually gives up the hold.
Cornell wants to control but Jones is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Jones wants to pass to mount but Cornell is defending the position.

Jones wants to work for an arm triangle but Cornell is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Jones is pressing down on Cornell's thigh, looking to free his foot. Cornell is holding on for now.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Cornell shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Jones but Jones pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Jones tries for a takedown but Cornell circles away easily

and Cornell counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Jones!
Cornell wants to control the pace but Jones is squirming around nicely.
Jones tries to hold on but Cornell postures up.
Cornell lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Jones hang on?
Cornell can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Jones is looking to escape.
Cornell connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Cornell avoids the attempt from Jones to control.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Cameron Cornell.
I think Cornell has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
