PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rolger Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Huell Howser (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Howser is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Calilfornia Uber Alles. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rolger Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Huell Howser!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, John Mangel and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Howser throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gracie.
Howser tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Gracie was well out of range. Poor timing from Howser.
Howser tries to move into range but Gracie moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
A slow jab from Howser misses its intended target.
Gracie misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Howser looks to score with a jab to the body but Gracie is just out of range.
Howser will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

It looks like Rolger Gracie has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Howser shoots in and bounces Gracie off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gracie manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Howser manages to get himself to full guard.
Gracie loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gracie accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Howser closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Gracie to the mat! Gracie manages to get full guard.

Gracie is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Howser decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Gracie tries for a takedown but Howser sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

and Howser counters with a single leg into guard. Gracie didn't expect that.

Howser decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gracie throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Howser works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.

Gracie slips a nice elbow through Howser's hands, connecting with Howser's forehead.
Gracie is trying to control. Howser wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Howser wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Gracie postures up in Howser's guard and throws a big left but Howser blocks it.

Gracie gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Howser to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Howser seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Howser closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Gracie is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Howser's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Howser's back!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Howser stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gracie swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gracie is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Howser prevents Gracie from getting back to his feet.
Gracie keeping moving, preventing Howser from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gracie throws a strike but Howser rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Gracie pulls Howser in close to his closed guard and prevents Howser from doing any damage or advancing position.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Gracie here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Howser gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Danga de danga de dang - Gracie scores with a four punch combination!
Howser scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Gracie doesn't seem bothered though.

Howser lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Gracie!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Well Gracie has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
