PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Phil Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cory Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Steel has chosen Ain't stoppin me as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Phil Davis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cory Steel!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Chris Downing and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A decent looking body kick lands there for Davis.
Davis lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Steel bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Davis's head.
A combination from Steel does no damage.
Steel shoots in for a double leg but Davis sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Davis instigates a clinch.
Davis scores a nice knee to the body.
Steel is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Davis gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
The referee calls for Davis to work.
Steel wants to get back to striking at distance but Davis won't allow it.
Steel wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Davis stalling in the clinch.
Davis prevents the takedown attempt.
Phil Davis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cory Steel.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Steel goes for a takedown attempt but Davis pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Davis closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Davis misses with a knee strike.
Davis prevents the takedown attempt.
Davis utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.
Steel takes a knee right on the jaw!

Davis wants the takedown. Steel is fighting it off but Davis persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Steel's guard against the cage.
Davis is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Davis in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Davis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Davis is working Steel over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Davis's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Davis wants to stand but Steel has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Davis lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Davis is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Davis trying to control but Steel is working from the bottom.
Steel keeping full guard, as Davis tries to pass.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Steel is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Steel working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Davis.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Davis trying to control the position from guard on top but Steel is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Davis prevents Steel from getting back to his feet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Davis tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Davis tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Steel swivels and escapes.
Steel defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Davis.

Davis pushes Steel up against the cage in a clinch.
Steel has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Davis avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Steel drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Davis's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Some wild striking there from Steel.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Davis moves in looking to clinch but Steel pushes him off.
Steel circles away from the clinch attempt.
Steel stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Davis throws a body kick that misses.
Davis is looking to clinch but Steel is avoiding it.

Davis moves into range and clinches up with Steel.
Steel takes a knee to the side of the body.
Davis lands a body shot.

Davis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Steel misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Davis wants to clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Davis moves into the clinch.
Knees to the body from Davis.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phil Davis dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Steel misses with a takedown

and Davis counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Davis.
The referee is keeping an eye on Davis - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Steel takes a knee to the side of the body.

Steel is trying to drag Davis to the mat but Davis just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Davis manages to break the clinch.
Steel has his takedown stuffed

and Davis counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Davis digs a right hand into Steel's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Steel's gas tank.

Davis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Steel misses with a wild combination.
Davis is looking to clinch but Steel is avoiding it.

Davis instigates a clinch.

Davis has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Steel regains guard immediately.

Steel has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Davis should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Steel has tightened it up now! Davis should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:46 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Cory Steel!
