PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frank Sikes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thomas Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sikes comes to the cage accompanied by Bye Bye Bye. Davis has chosen Vangelis - Alpha as his entrance music. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Sikes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Thomas Davis!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Daniel Franklin and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sikes turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Sikes scores with a jab to the jaw.
Davis swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Sikes counters with a takedown into side control.
Sikes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Davis keeps working.
Sikes misses with the ground and pound.

Sikes is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Davis has escaped the position, nice work there.
Sikes scores with punches from side control.
Sikes throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Davis is letting Sikes control him for a moment.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Sikes looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Sikes misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Davis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sikes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Sikes trying to control the position but Davis is working away.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sikes swings around for an armbar but Davis sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Sikes's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sikes trying to control the position.
Sikes has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Davis decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Davis enables Sikes to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Davis manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Sikes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Davis is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Sikes trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Sikes stops Davis from standing up.
Sikes wants to control from the top but Davis keeps moving.
Sikes showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Sikes trying to control the position from guard on top but Davis is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Frank Sikes has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Sikes takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Davis blocks the body kick.

Sikes is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Davis's half guard.
Davis is trying to stand up here but Sikes is controlling him well.
Sikes with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sikes has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Davis is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Sikes swinging wildly here.
Davis has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Davis swings away with a body shot that misses
and Sikes counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Davis thinking.
Sikes connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

Sikes scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Sikes stops Davis from getting back to his feet.
Sikes trying to control the action but Davis is working from the bottom.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Davis can do anything to dispel that myth.
Sikes sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Davis defending well though.

Sikes trying to control from half guard but Davis is working away.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Sikes tries to pass the half guard into mount. Davis knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Davis keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Frank Sikes has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Sikes throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Sikes swings and misses with a shot to the body
and Davis counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Davis swings widly with a right hand
and Sikes counters with a three punch combo that has Davis backing up. Davis nods at Sikes to acknowledge the strikes.
Sikes looks to land a combination. Davis sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Sikes takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Sikes fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Davis sizes up Sikes with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Frank Sikes is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A swing and a miss from Davis.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Sikes!
Davis is breathing heavily.
Sikes with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Sikes feints and then cracks Davis's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Davis down.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Davis steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Sikes. That one must have hurt.
A chopping leg kick lands by Sikes.
Sikes connects with a crisp jab.
Davis closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Thomas Davis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sikes throws a series of punches but Davis avoids them all with ease.
Sikes goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Sikes, as that shot connected.
A head kick misses from Sikes.
Sikes takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Sikes feints a jab promting Davis to slip. Sikes then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Davis slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Sikes lands with a cross.
Sikes throws a head kick that misses.
Davis doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Davis throws a lazy uppercut
and Sikes counters with a stiff right hand.
Danga de danga de dang - Sikes scores with a four punch combination!

Sikes is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Davis's half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Nice strikes from Sikes there.
Davis is in trouble now - Sikes has advanced to mount!
Sikes throws some wild stikes that Davis manages to avoid easily.
Davis is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Sikes wants to control the pace but Davis is squirming around nicely.

Sikes moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Davis has worked his arm free - good work by Davis!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Sikes dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Sikes cracks Davis with an open hand slap.
Sikes lands a front kick.
Davis has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
A looping hook to the body misses from Davis. Sikes does a little dance to reset his feet.
Sikes tests Davis's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Davis throws an off balance right hand
and Sikes counters with a nice uppercut.
Sikes dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Sikes closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Davis did well to prevent Sikes getting side control.

Sikes thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Davis's head.
Davis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Sikes wants to pass the guard but Davis is defending well.
Davis wants to get back to his feet.
Still in half guard, Sikes seems content to control.
Sikes working over Davis with some ground and pound. Davis looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Sikes thows a huge punch but Davis dodges it nicely.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Sikes escapes and gets back to his feet.
Davis misses with a body punch
and Sikes counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Davis slips a jab and a cross from Sikes.
Sikes ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

and Sikes counters with a stiff right hand.
Thomas Davis is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Sikes lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Davis backs up against the cage.
Davis on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Sikes scores with a hook to the body. Davis takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Sikes lands with a hook. Davis tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Sikes lands an overhand right.
Sikes cracks Davis with a right hand to the side of the head.

Sikes connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Davis's hands.

Davis walks into a straight right hand from Sikes.
Sikes connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Davis takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Frank Sikes is winning the standup battle so far.
Davis dodges the punch combination from Sikes.
Davis takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Sikes lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Davis at a distance.
A jab lands there for Sikes.
Sikes will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Davis has a pretty nasty looking mouse under his right eye.
Sikes scores with a shot to the body.
Sikes lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Davis rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Davis takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Sikes is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Sikes lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Sikes.

Sikes shoots in and bounces Davis off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Sikes controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Davis wants to stand up but Sikes is controlling him.
Sikes seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Thomas Davis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Sikes has gone for a leg lock! Davis slips out almost immediately though and dives into Sikes's guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Frank Sikes showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Sikes has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
