PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Albert Franken (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paulie Walnutz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paulie Walnutz told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Albert Franken!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paulie Walnutz!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Paulo Santos and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Walnutz throws a right hand that Franken ducks under and follows up with a left that Franken also avoids with ease.
Walnutz wants to slow Franken down by chopping away at his legs.

Franken darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Franken is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Franken is working for a submission of some sort.
Franken tries to pass the half guard into mount. Walnutz knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Franken is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Walnutz doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Franken.

Franken is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Franken is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Franken is breathing heavily.
Walnutz keeping control of the position.

Walnutz is in trouble now - Franken has advanced to mount!
Walnutz holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Franken tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

Franken looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Franken swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Walnutz is now in Franken's guard. A big mistake from Franken there, giving up the dominant position!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Walnutz wants to stand but Franken has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Walnutz really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Franken. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Franken manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Walnutz manages to get himself to full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Franken passes Walnutz's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Franken looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Franken works his way into side control.
Franken tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Walnutz gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Albert Franken dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Franken looks for a takedown but Walnutz sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Albert Franken. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice takedown defense from Walnutz. No joy for Franken on that attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Good leg kick by Walnutz there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Albert Franken is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Walnutz tries to clinch up but Franken circles away and keeps his distance.
Nice takedown defense from Walnutz. No joy for Franken on that attempt.
Walnutz moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Franken takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Nice sprawl there from Walnutz as Franken shoots in.
Franken shoots in but Walnutz avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Walnutz throws a hook to the side of Franken's head but Franken sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!

Franken is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Franken is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Walnutz reverses the position - he's now on top in Franken's guard.

Franken is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Walnutz avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Walnutz must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Franken moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Franken working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Walnutz doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Walnutz manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Franken is looking to stand up but Walnutz isn't so interested in that idea.

Walnutz is sitting in close to Franken's body. Franken has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Walnutz is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Walnutz is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Franken.
