PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Paul Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jordan Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Prozak - Under The Rain kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Paul Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Jordan Jones!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Johanna Lukiainen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones slips a jab from Martin.
Martin scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Jones shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Martin as he jumps to the side.
Jones shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Martin pinned against the cage. Martin gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Martin connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Jones uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Martin.
Martin throws a shot from downtown. Jones moves away and avoids it.
Martin stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Jones staying out of range there.
Martin stuffs the takedown attempt from Jones. Jones gets slowly back to his feet.
Paul Martin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jordan Jones.
Jones keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Martin.
Jones defending well as Martin loads up on a big left hand.

Martin throws a hook but Jones avoids it easily.

Martin takes the fight into the clinch.
Jones trying to stall but Martin improves his position.
Jones is trying to force a seperation but Martin has the dominant position.
Jones tries to circle away but Martin has him pinned against the cage.
Martin lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Jones can't find room to land a body shot as Martin controls the action.
Come on Martin - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
A body shot lands from Jones.

Jones escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A looping hook to the body misses from Martin. Jones does a little dance to reset his feet.
Jones misses with a takedown attempt - Martin sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Jones fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Martin clobbers Jones with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

Jones decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Martin keeping control of the position.

Martin is looking for a sweep. Jones is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Jones trying to control the action but Martin is working from the bottom.

Martin controlling the position for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fighters are battling for position here. Martin manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Martin keeping full guard, as Jones tries to pass.
Jones in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Jones throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Martin works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Jones wants to pass the guard but Martin is keeping the position.
Jones working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but Martin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Jones postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Martin is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Jones, into his guard.
Martin sitting in guard here, content to control.
Jones wants to sweep but no luck.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Martin dominated that round.
That's time! Martin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Jones tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Martin swivels and escapes.
Martin leaves Jones with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Martin throws a hook to the side of Jones's head but Jones sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Jones scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Jones thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Martin keeps Jones under control for a moment.
Jones wants to control but Martin is keeping him busy.
Jones misses with the ground and pound.

Martin struggling a bit here.

Jones is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Martin knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Jones is breathing heavily.
Martin manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jones connects with a nice short shot to Martin's temple.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Martin is staying active underneath Jones, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Jones might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Martin kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Jones is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Martin doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Jones.
Jones is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Martin is pressing down on Jones's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Martin is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Well, if Martin is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Jones tries to get to full guard but Martin has control of the leg.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Jones looking for submissions off his back.
Martin seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Jones wants to control but Martin is keeping busy and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Paul Martin will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Jones moves out of range as Martin strikes.
Martin tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Jones was well out of range. Poor timing from Martin.
Martin thows a body shot but no joy.
Nice shot lands for Martin.
Martin lands a jab to the nose.
Martin leaves Jones with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Martin swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Jones ducks under a wild hook from Martin.
Paul Martin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jones tries to clinch
and Martin counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Jones slips a jab from Martin.
Jordan Jones is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Martin throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Jones.

Paul Martin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jordan Jones.

Jones takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Martin fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Jones looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Martin looks to score with a jab to the body but Jones is just out of range.

Jones closes the distance and clinches up with Martin, looking for a takedown. Jones pushes Martin against the cage but Martin circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Martin scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Jones doesn't seem bothered though.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Nice defenses there by Jones.
Martin throws a combination. Jones tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Paul Martin is winning the standup battle so far.
Jones moves out of range of the strikes.
Martin throws out a powerful jab.
Martin misses with a looping right.

Jones changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Martin looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Martin wants to control but Jones postures up.
Jones throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Jones tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Jones has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Jones tries for a kimura but Martin is defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Martin parries the strikes from Jones easily there. Jones is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Martin to escape.

Jones is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Martin is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Jones is looking to take a break and control but Martin is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Paul Martin is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Jones sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Martin is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Martin dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Jordan Jones has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Martin throws a one two combo.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Martin wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Martin misses with a jab, cross combination.
Martin jabs at Jones's body.
Martin comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

And that's the end of the fight!
Paul Martin showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Martin, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
