PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Nicholas Castle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diogo Vargas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nicholas Castle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Diogo Vargas!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Leandro Rodrigues and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Castle fails with a takedown attempt.
Castle shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Vargas as he jumps to the side.
Vargas looks to land a right hand but Castle moved out of range.
Vargas is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Vargas moves into the clinch.
Vargas tries to land knees in the clinch but Castle avoids the damage to the body.
Vargas missing with knees to the body.

Vargas escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Castle has Vargas up against the cage in a clinch.
Castle keeps control of Vargas as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Vargas breaks from the clinch.
Vargas is looking to land body kicks.
Vargas doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Castle counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Vargas!
Vargas wants to control but Castle is having none of it.

Castle looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Castle controlling from the full mount.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Castle prevents Vargas from getting the reversal.
Vargas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Castle. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Castle stands up from mount. Strange move.
Castle shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Vargas pinned against the cage. Vargas gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nicholas Castle. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Castle looks for a takedown but Vargas sprawls well.
Castle looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Vargas is fending him off so far but Castle persists. Nope, Vargas circles away and we're back to standing.

Castle changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Vargas looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Castle just content to control the position.

Castle is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vargas has escaped the position, nice work there.
Castle is breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Vargas is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Castle off and has taken his back!
Castle prevents Vargas from getting a body triangle.
Castle is trying to break free.
What can Castle do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Vargas throwing wild punches that miss their target.
Castle looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands.
Vargas trying to control.
Castle wants to control his opponent's hands but Vargas gets his hands free.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Castle turns into Vargas and is now in his guard.
Castle controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Castle tries to stand but Vargas is controlling from the bottom.
Castle sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Castle trying to control the position from guard on top but Vargas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Vargas throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Castle won't allow Vargas to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Castle gets to his feet. Vargas looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Castle tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Vargas counters with a solid body kick.

Castle darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Castle wants to lay and pray for a moment but Vargas keeps working.
Vargas avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Castle.
Castle is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Vargas!
Castle fails to land the takedown.
Horrible takedown by Castle or perhaps it was just good defense by Vargas which made him look bad.
Castle shoots in for a takedown but Vargas shows good takedown defense.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nicholas Castle dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Vargas has taken the fight to the clinch.

Castle successfully pulls guard.
Castle not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Vargas avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Vargas must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Castle working for a triangle but Vargas defends it easily.
Vargas is looking to stand up but Castle won't let him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they both work up against the meshing.

Castle is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Vargas is breathing heavily.

Castle is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Vargas frees his head nicely. Oh but Castle has switched to an armbar! Vargas is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
