PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Alex Beltran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Desmond McGuinness (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Alex Beltran!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Desmond McGuinness!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Sam Margolis and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McGuinness clinches up against the cage.
Beltran trying to land knees to the body.
McGuinness tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Beltran smiles and moves away.
Beltran tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and McGuinness counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
McGuinness prevents Beltran from standing back up.
McGuinness thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Beltran's head.

McGuinness is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Beltran doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time McGuinness.
McGuinness is controlling the pace.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
McGuinness wants to pass the guard but Beltran is defending well.

McGuinness slips a nice elbow through Beltran's hands, connecting with Beltran's forehead.
McGuinness thows a huge punch but Beltran dodges it nicely.
McGuinness seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Beltran does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
McGuinness working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Beltran's thigh. Beltran counters though and makes it back to full guard.

McGuinness stands up from Beltran's guard - McGuinness perhaps looking for a knockout.

McGuinness closes the distance and clinches up with Beltran, looking for a takedown. McGuinness pushes Beltran against the cage but Beltran circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
McGuinness pulls out of a head kick attempt.

McGuinness looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Beltran!
McGuinness looking to control but Beltran is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Desmond McGuinness dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


McGuinness misses with a wild combination.
Alex Beltran seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McGuinness fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Beltran avoids it really well and circles away.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
McGuinness forces Beltran back against the cage and clinches.
Beltran using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.
McGuinness can't break the clinch.
McGuinness tries to circle away but Beltran has him pinned against the cage.
Beltran scores a nice knee to the body.

Beltran throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but McGuinness blocks it with crossed arms.

Beltran lands a nice elbow from the clinch.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Beltran jumps into guard, dragging McGuinness to the mat.
McGuinness wants to stand but Beltran has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Beltran wriggles free and stands up.
Beltran clinches but McGuinness breaks the clinch

and McGuinness counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
McGuinness is trying to force a seperation but Beltran has the dominant position.
McGuinness managing to block the knees to the body from Beltran.

McGuinness successfully pulls guard.
McGuinness trying to keep a closed guard but Beltran is proving a slippery customer.
Beltran trying to control the position from guard on top but McGuinness is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

McGuinness is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Beltran is controlling him.
Beltran wants to stand but McGuinness is controlling his posture from full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Beltran drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Beltran jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

McGuinness had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Beltran defends it easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
McGuinness looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
McGuinness has a takedown stuffed.
McGuinness looks for a takedown but Beltran sprawls well.
Alex Beltran has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Desmond McGuinness.
Beltran tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and McGuinness cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Beltran wants to clinch but McGuinness slips to the side

and McGuinness holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

McGuinness decides to pull guard.
Beltran thows a big elbow that misses.
Beltran stopping the sweep attempt from McGuinness.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
McGuinness pulls Beltran in to control the position.

McGuinness has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Beltran off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Beltran tries to clinch but fails miserably

and McGuinness counters with a nice double leg into guard.

McGuinness wants to control from the top but Beltran keeps moving.

McGuinness is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Beltran is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Beltran has escaped and now he's on top!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Alex Beltran will probably get the nod.
That's time! Beltran's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Beltran has his takedown stuffed

and McGuinness counters by moving into the clinch.
McGuinness creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Beltran looking to throw knees to the head but McGuinness is blocking nicely.
Beltran using the Thai plumb to throw knees but McGuinness has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Beltran wants a takedown.
McGuinness leaning against his opponent.
McGuinness fails to pull the fight into his guard.

McGuinness jumps guard and drags Beltran to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

McGuinness really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Beltran. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Beltran drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but McGuinness manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Beltran has McGuinness in his guard.
McGuinness prevents Beltran from getting back to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

McGuinness is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
McGuinness missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
McGuinness showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Beltran is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
McGuinness sitting in guard here, content to control.
McGuinness trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
McGuinness trying to stand up but can't free himself from Beltran's guard.
McGuinness must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
McGuinness controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
McGuinness throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Beltran works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Desmond McGuinness has got the better of the ground game so far.
McGuinness pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Beltran is keeping the position for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
McGuinness controls from within his opponent's guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Desmond McGuinness comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think McGuinness has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
