PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Brodie Tobias (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Pierce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tobias kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is The Serpents Tongue. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Radbod Blank and Saam Ante.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A kick lands to the mid section there for Tobias.
Pierce shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Tobias pinned against the cage. Tobias gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Pierce tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Tobias paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Tobias instigates a clinch.

Pierce pulls guard successfully.
Tobias wants to control from the top but Pierce keeps moving.

Pierce working for a triangle but Tobias defends it easily.
Tobias trying to control the position from guard on top but Pierce is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Pierce can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Tobias controls the pace.
Tobias looking to sit in guard and control but Pierce gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Pierce is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Pierce trying to control the position from guard on top but Tobias is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pierce might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Tobias kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Pierce won't allow Tobias to sweep him here.
Pierce wants to get up but he can't break Tobias's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Tobias wants to sweep here but Pierce controlling him for the moment.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Tobias throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Pierce.

Tobias fails with the takedown
and Pierce counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Tobias is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Tobias darts in and clinches Pierce up against the cage.

Tobias keeps control of Pierce as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Pierce wants a takedown.
Pierce looks gassed!

Tobias breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Pierce takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Pierce stuffs the takedown attempt from Tobias. Tobias gets slowly back to his feet.
Pierce shoots in and drives through. Tobias sprawls well.
Brodie Tobias has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Pierce.

Tobias changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Pierce looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Tobias prevents Pierce from escaping the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Tobias stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Tobias changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Pierce tries to avoid it but Tobias manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Pierce to the ground. Pierce escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Tobias escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Pierce tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Tobias counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Pierce is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Brodie Tobias dominated that round.

Pierce throws a lazy head kick

and Tobias counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Tobias throws a strike but Pierce avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pierce is on top in guard.
Pierce wants to control from the top but Tobias keeps moving.
Tobias is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Tobias thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pierce's head.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Tobias seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Tobias looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Pierce with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Pierce gets full guard.

Pierce pushes Tobias off and gets back to his feet.
Pierce darts in trying to clinch

and Tobias counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Pierce is trying to force a seperation but Tobias has the dominant position.

Tobias manages to break the clinch.
Tobias misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Tobias.
Pierce tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Pierce fails to land the takedown.
Tobias is trying hard to land a takedown here. Pierce sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brodie Tobias. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Pierce shoots in and bounces Tobias off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Pierce wants to control from the top but Tobias keeps moving.

Tobias looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Pierce stands up over Tobias, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Pierce trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Pierce is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pierce trying to stand up but can't free himself from Tobias's guard.
Pierce advances position into side control!
Pierce wants to lay and pray for a moment but Tobias keeps working.
Pierce connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Tobias some visible discomfort.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Paul Pierce will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Tobias is covering up but some of the strikes from Pierce are getting through and doing damage.

Pierce is working for a rear naked choke. Tobias is not defending it well and Pierce has tightened it up quickly! This could be all over! Tobias refuses to tap and goes to sleep, forcing the referee to intervene. A little trickle of blood came out of Tobias's nose as his head slumped to the floor. That is naaaasty!
