The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fernandes tries to clinch there but Xavier circles away.
Fernandes fails with an attempt to clinch.

Fernandes clinches.

Xavier is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Fernandes can't fight it off and eventually Xavier manages to take the fight to the floor. Fernandes looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Xavier prevents Fernandes from getting back to his feet.
Xavier postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Xavier drops back looking for a leg! Fernandes is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Fernandes manages to kick Xavier off! Xavier jumps back into Fernandes's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fernandes is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Fernandes wants to clinch.

Fernandes tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Xavier paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Xavier avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
The fight stays on the outside here - Fernandes looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Xavier keeps the fight on the outside.

Xavier shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Xavier lands with a punch from half guard.
Xavier looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Fernandes with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Xavier prevents Fernandes from standing back up.

Xavier is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Fernandes defends it well.
Fernandes is looking to escape.

Xavier passes to side control.

Fernandes on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Fernandes is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Xavier asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Fernandes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Xavier. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Xavier lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Fernandes down.

Xavier has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Fernandes tries to buck Xavier off but he can't manage it.

Xavier with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
You get the feeling that Fernandes really doesn't like being in this position too much.

Xavier working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Fernandes looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Xavier! Submission of the night perhaps?
