PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Butch Reed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shelton Naysmith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Butch Reed!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Shelton Naysmith!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Richard Clark and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Naysmith loads up on a big right hand but Reed slips the punch.
Naysmith misses with a head kick.

Reed bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Naysmith tries to improve position but can't.
Naysmith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Reed. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Reed landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Reed taking a breather here.
Naysmith tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Reed working away.
Reed scoring with punches from side control.
Naysmith parries the strikes from Reed easily there. Reed is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Naysmith to escape.
Naysmith is trying to buck Reed off.

Reed has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Good exchange - Naysmith coming out on top.

Reed gets a clinch.
Naysmith tries to work over Reed's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Naysmith misses with the head strike.
Naysmith tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Reed's elbow.
Reed wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Naysmith has him pressed against the cage.
Reed blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Reed dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.

Naysmith drags the fight down to the ground.
Reed wants to control from the top but Naysmith keeps moving.
Reed throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Reed chips away with some ground and pound.
Reed works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Reed tries to pass the half guard into mount. Naysmith knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Reed prevents Naysmith from improving his position.
Naysmith is refusing to be controlled, as Reed sits in half guard.
Naysmith keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Reed throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Naysmith avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Reed.
Reed passes the guard and advances to mount!

Reed is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Naysmith can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Naysmith is squirming around, avoiding Reed's attempts to control the action.
Naysmith is wriggling around trying to escape.

Naysmith wants to try and get back to his feet.
Reed trying to control but Naysmith is having none of it.
Naysmith looks gassed!
Naysmith is bucking up trying to escape but Reed cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Naysmith is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Butch Reed dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Reed feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Reed stays in close to Naysmith's body and controls the position.
Naysmith keeping moving, preventing Reed from controlling successfully.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Butch Reed.

Butch Reed overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Reed pushes down on Naysmith's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Reed uses his free foot to push down on Naysmith's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Naysmith.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Reed cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Reed tries to control but Naysmith wriggling away.
Reed dominating with strikes here.
Reed can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Naysmith is looking to escape.

Reed goes for an armbar but Naysmith turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Naysmith.
Reed is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Naysmith postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Reed is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Naysmith, into his guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Naysmith wriggles free and stands up.
Naysmith looks to clinch

and Reed decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Naysmith's guard.

Reed looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Naysmith with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Naysmith tries to roll over but Reed keeps him under control.

Reed is working for a submission of some sort.
Naysmith is trying to get back to full guard.
Reed not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Reed looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Reed throwing shots but Naysmith is blocking nicely.
Naysmith tries to get to full guard but Reed has control of the leg.
Reed wants to take a breather but Naysmith is having none of it.

Reed stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Naysmith to get to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Reed closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Naysmith to the mat! Naysmith manages to get full guard.
Reed is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Butch Reed dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Naysmith misses with a body punch

and Reed counters with a single leg into guard. Naysmith didn't expect that.

Reed has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Naysmith's face.

Reed working some short elbows here. He postures up to throw some more ground and pound but Naysmith slips a leg through to get back to half guard. Nice work.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Reed shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Naysmith manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Reed counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Reed has a takedown stuffed.
Naysmith lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Naysmith ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Reed moves away.

Reed shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Reed has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Butch Reed showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Reed, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
