PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jose Pinto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Henrique Cardoso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cardoso has chosen Stemm - Face the pain as his entrance music. Henrique Cardoso struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 157.4lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Henrique Cardoso has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jose Pinto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Henrique Cardoso!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Alexandre Firmino and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pinto circles away from the clinch attempt.

Cardoso darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Pinto moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Pinto is looking to stand up but Cardoso isn't so interested in that idea.
Pinto wants to control but Cardoso passes easily into half guard.
Pinto tries to roll over but Cardoso keeps him under control.
Cardoso missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Pinto holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cardoso thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pinto's head.

Pinto tries to roll over but Cardoso keeps him under control.
Pinto on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Pinto tries to get out of the position.
Cardoso is trying to control. Pinto wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Cardoso looks to land a combination but Pinto avoids it well.
Cardoso misses with the combination.
Pinto shoots in for a takedown but Cardoso shows good takedown defense.

Pinto bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Cardoso is looking to regain half guard here but Pinto keeps moving and retains side control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pinto tries to pass to full mount but Cardoso defends it.

Cardoso moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Pinto slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Cardoso is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jose Pinto.
Cardoso looks to land a combination but Pinto avoids it well.
Cardoso wants to clinch up but Pinto keeps it at a distance.
Cardoso doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Pinto counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Pinto won't allow Cardoso to sweep him here.
Cardoso looks gassed!
Pinto not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Cardoso keeping moving, preventing Pinto from controlling successfully.
Cardoso is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

That was a close round but I would say that Jose Pinto will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Cardoso has his takedown stuffed

and Pinto counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Cardoso's guard now.

Pinto looking to sit in guard and control but Cardoso gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Cardoso drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Pinto manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Cardoso has Pinto in his guard.

Cardoso is breathing heavily.

Pinto keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Cardoso's head.

Cardoso looking to hit a scissor sweep but Pinto is one step ahead there.

Pinto lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Pinto tries to pass the half guard into mount. Cardoso knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Cardoso wants to control but Pinto is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Pinto counters with a nice double leg into side control. Cardoso won't be happy with that.

Cardoso takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Cardoso seems a little lost for a moment, as Pinto dominates the positioning.

Pinto's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
