Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Antonio Kovalov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rodolfo Gusman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gusman is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: La sonora santanera - El santo, el cavernario. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Antonio Kovalov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rodolfo Gusman!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Vladimir Khabensky and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gusman scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Kovalov tries to bench press Gusman off him but Gusman keeps the position.
Gusman controls the position.

Gusman has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Gusman misses with a wild body shot.

Gusman moves into the clinch.

Gusman turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Kovalov is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Gusman is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Gusman can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Kovalov is looking to escape.
Kovalov is looking to improve his position but Gusman isn't that keen on the idea.
Kovalov is squirming around, avoiding Gusman's attempts to control the action.

Gusman trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Kovalov is desperately trying to improve his position but Gusman has a good base and remains in mount.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Kovalov is wriggling around trying to escape.
Gusman controlling from mount.
Gusman wants to control the pace but Kovalov is squirming around nicely.

Despite being in the dominant position, Rodolfo Gusman just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A telegraphed right hand from Gusman misses the target.

Kovalov gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Gusman to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Kovalov manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
You get the feeling that Gusman really doesn't like being in this position too much.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rodolfo Gusman dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Gusman swings for the body but Kovalov moves out of range.
Antonio Kovalov is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Gusman lands the left hand.
Kovalov shoots and misses

and Gusman counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Gusman.

Gusman gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Gusman connects with a couple of short punches.
Gusman controls from within his opponent's guard.
Kovalov is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Gusman is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Gusman is pushing down on Kovalov's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kovalov is fighting to maintain full guard but Gusman has managed to sneak the leg through.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kovalov tries to lock up and control but Gusman gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Gusman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Despite being in the dominant position, Rodolfo Gusman just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Kovalov gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Gusman counters with a stiff right hand.
Kovalov takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

and Gusman counters with a takedown into side control.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Antonio Kovalov. That's going to take a lot out of him.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rodolfo Gusman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Kovalov's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Kovalov shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Gusman counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Kovalov's guard now.

Gusman slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Rodolfo Gusman.

Kovalov shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Kovalov prevents Gusman from standing back up.
Rodolfo Gusman has got the better of the ground game so far.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gusman tries to kick Kovalov off in order to stand up. Kovalov Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
Gusman wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Kovalov tries for a kimura but Gusman is defending well.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Gusman turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Gusman manages to end up in side control.

Kovalov tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gusman wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Rodolfo Gusman.
Gusman needs to keep his hands up - Kovalov had a free shot at his head there.

Gusman bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Gusman tries to advance to mount but can't.
Gusman moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Kovalov tries to bench press Gusman off him but Gusman keeps the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rodolfo Gusman comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gusman has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
