PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Katy Perry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Manny Pacquiao (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Katy Perry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Manny Pacquiao!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A punch combination from Perry misses.
Pacquiao tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Perry paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Pacquiao throws a one two combo.


It looks like Katy Perry has been cut.
Perry fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Pacquiao avoids it really well and circles away.
Perry fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Katy Perry seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Perry fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Pacquiao manages to avoid it.
Pacquiao keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Katy Perry. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Perry shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Pacquiao as he jumps to the side.
Pacquiao stuffs the takedown attempt from Perry. Perry gets slowly back to his feet.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Pacquiao.
Perry is breathing heavily.

Pacquiao shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Perry manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Pacquiao tries to free his leg and advance position but Perry is retaining full guard.
Pacquiao is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Perry looking for a sweep. Not yet Perry, not yet.

Pacquiao decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Perry, up you get!
Perry throws a leg kick

and Pacquiao counters with a nice double leg into side control. Perry won't be happy with that.
Perry might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Pacquiao lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Perry down.
Perry tries to improve position but can't.
Pacquiao cracks Perry with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Pacquiao remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pacquiao's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Perry is pushing Pacquiao's head away, looking to escape. Pacquiao manages to hold on to the position though.
Pacquiao moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
I looks like Pacquiao might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao shoots in but Perry avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Perry forces Pacquiao back against the cage and clinches.

Perry successfully pulls guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Pacquiao is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Perry bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pacquiao's guard.

Perry is trying to get back to full guard.
Pacquiao is looking to take a break and control but Perry is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Pacquiao is taking a breather. Perry says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Pacquiao shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Pacquiao was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Pacquiao fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Pacquiao is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Perry to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Perry shrugs it off.
Perry sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Perry tries to roll over but Pacquiao keeps him under control.
Perry wants to control but Pacquiao is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Pacquiao is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Perry defends it well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Perry closes the distance looking to clinch
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Pacquiao is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Perry is trying to maintain the position but Pacquiao is very close to passing his half guard.

Pacquiao is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Perry defends it well.
Pacquiao wants to lay and pray for a moment but Perry keeps working.
Perry is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pacquiao's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pacquiao's back!
Perry tries to keep control of the position but Pacquiao is staying busy.
Perry gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Pacquiao feints and then cracks Perry's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Perry down.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Pacquiao. Perry shrugs it off though.
Pacquiao shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Perry defends it nicely.

Pacquiao gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Perry to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Pacquiao closes this distance looking for a takedown but Perry circles away.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pacquiao can do anything to dispel that myth.

Well, if Perry is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Pacquiao takes the fight into the clinch.
Katy Perry has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Perry jumps guard but Pacquiao stands there with Perry around his waist. Perry gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Pacquiao lands an elbow inside.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Pacquiao lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Perry tries to pull guard but Pacquiao won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Katy Perry. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pacquiao lands a damaging elbow.

Pacquiao has hold of one of Perry's legs. Perry is fighting the takedown attempt but Pacquiao gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Pacquiao stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Perry swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Pacquiao wants to control from the top but Perry keeps moving.

Perry looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Perry wants to sweep here but Pacquiao controlling him for the moment.

Perry is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Pacquiao is aware though and is defending well.

I would just about give that final round to Manny Pacquiao.
Well Pacquiao has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
