PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fighter Guy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Smith Wesson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Fighter Guy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Smith Wesson!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Marco Blurström and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wesson shoots in and bounces Guy off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Wesson wants to control from the top but Guy keeps moving.
Wesson is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Guy looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Guy looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Wesson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Wesson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Guy is proving hard to escape from.

Wesson stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Wesson tries to clinch there but Guy circles away.
Wesson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Guy misses with a takedown
and Wesson counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Guy is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Guy fails with the takedown

and Wesson counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Wesson.

Wesson pulls guard.
Wesson looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Guy working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Wesson holds on and takes a little breather.
Guy looking to sit in guard and control but Wesson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Wesson trying to control the position from guard on top but Guy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Guy is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Wesson drops back looking for a leg! Guy is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Guy manages to kick Wesson off! Wesson jumps back into Guy's guard.
Wesson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Guy had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Wesson defends it easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wesson working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Wesson controlling from the top position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Wesson trying to control but Guy is working from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Wesson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Smith Wesson.
Wesson tries to clinch up.
Wesson tries to close the distance and clinch up but Guy swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Guy closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Wesson did well to prevent Guy getting side control.
Wesson is trying to control but can't.

Guy seems to be working for a kimura but Wesson defends the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Smith Wesson dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Guy shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Wesson counters with a nice double leg into side control. Guy won't be happy with that.
Wesson is looking to take a break and control but Guy is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Wesson decides to stand up, so the ref orders Guy to his feet.
Wesson is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Guy shoots and misses

and Wesson counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Wesson passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Guy!
Guy sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Smith Wesson has got the better of the ground game so far.

Wesson wants to control but Guy is keeping him busy.
Wesson slows the pace down in half guard.
Guy slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Wesson stands up from guard. Let's bang!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wesson stalks Guy and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Guy's face. Guy staggers backwards, shaken.
Wesson moves in looking to clinch but Guy pushes him off.
Wesson fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Wesson clinches.
Guy is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Wesson is defending well for now.
The referee is keeping an eye on Wesson - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Guy misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Wesson.
Guy throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.

Wesson jumps guard and drags Guy to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Guy slips nicely into half guard.
Guy stalling.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wesson avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Guy.
Guy missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Wesson tries to get to full guard but Guy has control of the leg.
Guy thows a huge punch but Wesson dodges it nicely.
Wesson is looking to control Guy's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Wesson avoid being mounted?

Guy is trying to work for a kimura but Wesson is defending well.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Wesson closes the distance and clinches.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Wesson manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Wesson lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.

Wesson manages to break the clinch.
Guy fails with the takedown

and Wesson counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Fighter Guy. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Guy keeping moving, preventing Wesson from controlling successfully.
Guy throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Wesson trying to stand up but can't free himself from Guy's guard.
Wesson trying to control the position from guard on top but Guy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Smith Wesson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Wesson changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Guy looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Guy gets back to half guard.
Guy has hold of Wesson's hands but Wesson slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Wesson trying to control the action but Guy is working from the bottom.
Wesson thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Guy's head.
Guy is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Wesson is trying to work for a kimura but Guy is defending well.

Guy has hold of a guillotine but he's not going to be able to crank on it really with only half guard, so it's no trouble for Wesson. Oh but Guy has got full guard now! Oh boy! This one could be over very soon! Wesson goes limp - he's gone! Guy jumps up and celebrates with the crowd - fantastic submission finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:35 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Fighter Guy!
