PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chael Brownie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gedo Sake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gedo Sake told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Chael Brownie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gedo Sake!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Felipe Paraventi and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Brownie closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Brownie lands in his opponent's guard.
Sake not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Brownie throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Sake works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Brownie is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sake has momentary wrist control but Brownie slips an elbow through the middle.
Brownie postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Brownie in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Brownie advances to half guard.
Sake looks like he's trying to stand up.
Brownie thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Sake's head.

Sake is trying to get back to full guard.
Brownie stops Sake from getting back to his feet.
Sake slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Brownie is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Sake is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Sake has escaped and now he's on top!

Sake got a little sloppy there for a moment and Brownie has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sake has managed to get both his arms back between Brownie's legs - danger averted.
Brownie is breathing heavily.
Sake has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Brownie is proving hard to escape from.
Sake trying to control but Brownie is working from the bottom.

Sake gets to his feet. Brownie looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Sake.
Brownie looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Sake shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Brownie pinned against the cage. Brownie gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Sake closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Brownie has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sake seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Sake seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Brownie does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Sake seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Sake wants to take a breather but Brownie is having none of it.

Sake is trying to work for a kimura but Brownie is defending well.
Brownie is staying active underneath Sake, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sake tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

Sake thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Brownie is trying to improve his position.

Sake stands up.

Brownie shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Gedo Sake will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

and Sake counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Sake.
Sake trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Sake is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Brownie is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Brownie looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Sake passes Brownie's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Brownie is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Sake pulls his head out easily.
Sake slips a nice elbow through Brownie's hands, connecting with Brownie's forehead.

Sake is working for a kimura but Brownie is defending it quite comfortably.
Sake wants to lay and pray for a moment but Brownie keeps working.

Brownie is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Sake pulls his head out easily.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Sake wants to take a breather but Brownie is having none of it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sake fails in his attempt to clinch.
Brownie keeps the fight on the outside.

Sake shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Brownie is trying to defend but Sake finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Brownie is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sake's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sake's back!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Brownie is trying to improve his position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Sake ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Sake shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Sake was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Brownie is looking to improve his position but Sake isn't that keen on the idea.

Gedo Sake showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Sake shoots and misses

and Brownie counters with a shoot takedown. Sake fights it but they end up in guard.

Brownie drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Brownie jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Brownie is looking to work some ground and pound but Sake has wrist control.

Brownie stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sake swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sake trying to keep a closed guard but Brownie is proving a slippery customer.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Brownie doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Sake counters with a three punch combo that has Brownie backing up. Brownie nods at Sake to acknowledge the strikes.

Sake tries to free his leg and advance position but Brownie is retaining full guard.
Sake is pushing down on Brownie's leg trying to pass to half guard. Brownie is fighting to maintain full guard but Sake has managed to sneak the leg through.
Brownie is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sake's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sake's back!

Sake tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Sake wants to control but Brownie is having none of it.
Sake is in a horrible position here. Brownie smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Brownie jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Sake is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Sake and Brownie has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Brownie throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Sake works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Brownie thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Sake to regain full guard.
Sake utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Sake is looking to stand up but Brownie isn't so interested in that idea.

Brownie drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Sake dives on top into guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sake passes into half guard.

Sake decides to return to a standing position.
Sake scores with a one two! Brownie had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Sake fails with the takedown

so Brownie counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Sake throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Sake working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Brownie doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Brownie manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Chael Brownie.
Well Sake has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
