PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Fritiof Konkas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryo Kanzaki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Fritiof Konkas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ryo Kanzaki!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Bruno Lombardi and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Konkas jumps guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kanzaki is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Kanzaki chips away with some ground and pound.
Kanzaki landing some decent shots from guard.
Kanzaki controls from within his opponent's guard.
Konkas keeping moving, preventing Kanzaki from controlling successfully.
Konkas wants to get back to his feet but Kanzaki is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Kanzaki drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Kanzaki jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Kanzaki trying to control but Konkas is working from the bottom.
Konkas knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kanzaki on the ground.
Kanzaki sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Konkas looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Kanzaki trying to control the position from guard on top but Konkas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Kanzaki bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Kanzaki has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Konkas is trying to improve his position.
Kanzaki is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Konkas's shoulder. That is not cool.
Konkas is trying to improve his position.

Kanzaki tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Kanzaki stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Ryo Kanzaki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Konkas is looking to clinch.
Kanzaki on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Konkas has his takedown stuffed

and Kanzaki counters with a takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Kanzaki landing strikes.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kanzaki is looking to take a break and control but Konkas is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Kanzaki prevents Konkas from escaping the position.
Kanzaki advances nicely into full mount.
Konkas is trying to escape the mount.
Konkas squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Konkas is breathing heavily.
Konkas is trying to escape the mount.

Konkas tries to lock up and control but Kanzaki gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Konkas swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Kanzaki wants to control the pace but Konkas is squirming around nicely.

Kanzaki is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Konkas is surviving well by controlling Kanzaki's body position as best he can.
Konkas throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Konkas is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Kanzaki can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Konkas is looking to escape.
Kanzaki working the ground and pound effectively.

Kanzaki working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Kanzaki in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Konkas really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Konkas tries to hold on but Kanzaki postures up.

Kanzaki gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kanzaki tries to score a power double leg takedown but Konkas sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kanzaki somewhat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryo Kanzaki dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Kanzaki has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Kanzaki closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Konkas did well to prevent Kanzaki getting side control.

Kanzaki decides to stand up.
Konkas lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Kanzaki moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Kanzaki gets the takedown into side control.

Kanzaki tries for a kimura but Konkas is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kanzaki trying to control the action but Konkas is working from the bottom.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Kanzaki misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Ryo Kanzaki has got the better of the ground game so far.

Konkas regains half guard.

Konkas looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Kanzaki is controlling the pace.
Kanzaki lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Kanzaki is looking for a kimura but Konkas is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kanzaki to get the leverage.
Kanzaki is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Kanzaki seems to be looking for submissions.

Kanzaki wants to work for an arm triangle but Konkas is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Kanzaki is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Konkas manages to get to full guard.
Kanzaki is looking to stand up but Konkas won't let him.
Konkas keeping busy, throwing shots from the bottom.
Kanzaki wants to control from the top but Konkas keeps moving.
Kanzaki might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Konkas kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Konkas is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Konkas misses with a wild combination.
Konkas fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Kanzaki.

Kanzaki goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Konkas has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Kanzaki but great work by Konkas.

Konkas is taking a breather. Kanzaki says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Konkas thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Konkas tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Kanzaki is in trouble now - Konkas has advanced to mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryo Kanzaki showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!



Kanzaki clinches up with Konkas and pushes him back against the cage.
Konkas is trying to break the clinch but Kanzaki is controlling him.
Konkas scores with an uppercut up the middle.

Kanzaki jumps into guard, dragging Konkas to the mat.
Konkas won't allow Kanzaki to sweep him here.
Kanzaki keeping moving, preventing Konkas from controlling successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Konkas is looking to work some ground and pound but Kanzaki has wrist control.

Kanzaki has a closed guard, preventing Konkas from standing up.
Kanzaki lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Konkas!

A nice elbow there by Kanzaki.

Kanzaki has hold of Konkas's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Konkas manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Konkas slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Konkas tries to get to full guard but Kanzaki has control of the leg.
Kanzaki wants to control but Konkas is keeping him busy.
Konkas wants to get back to his feet.
Kanzaki performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Konkas is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Kanzaki scores with a couple of nice shots.

Kanzaki decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Kanzaki drives through and clinches with Konkas against the cage.
Kanzaki keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Konkas's efforts to push away.
Konkas tries for a takedown. No joy.
Kanzaki keeps control of Konkas as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Konkas is fighting off a takedown attempt but Kanzaki is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Konkas to the mat. Konkas regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Kanzaki stands up over Konkas, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Ryo Kanzaki is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Kanzaki not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Konkas wants to stand and escape but Kanzaki is having none of it.
Kanzaki working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Konkas's head.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Kanzaki looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Konkas!
Fritiof Konkas has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Ryo Kanzaki comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Kanzaki winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
