PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Bezerra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Luiz Fernando (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Luiz Fernando will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Bezerra!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Fernando!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Emerson Jorge and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Fernando is working for takedown but Bezerra is calmly controlling the position for now.
Bezerra is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Fernando pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Fernando lands a left hand.
Bezerra drops down looking for an ankle pick but Fernando pulls his leg out and moves away.

Fernando feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Bezerra sprawling to the canvas! Bezerra rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Fernando finish him?!


Bezerra is rocked!

Fernando takes the fight into the clinch.

Fernando pulls guard successfully.
Bezerra trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Fernando is on top in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Fernando is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Fernando scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Fernando controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Bezerra controls Fernando momentarily but Fernando frees himself.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Fernando lands a body shot.

Bezerra pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Bezerra fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlos Bezerra. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bezerra is breathing heavily.
Fernando fails with the takedown.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Fernando dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Bezerra tries to pull guard but Fernando holds him up against the cage and eventually Bezerra drops back down to his feet.

Fernando manages to break the clinch.
Bezerra misses with a double jab.
Bezerra closes the distance but Fernando moves to the side

and Fernando counters by moving into the clinch.

Fernando controlling the position.
Fernando is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Bezerra pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Fernando is keeping the position for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bezerra trying to control the position from guard on top but Fernando is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Fernando is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Bezerra pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Fernando is keeping the position for now.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Bezerra working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Fernando keeping moving, preventing Bezerra from controlling successfully.
Fernando wants to stand up but Bezerra is controlling him.
Bezerra trying to control the position from guard on top but Fernando is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Bezerra misses with a takedown
and Fernando counters with a series of strikes. Bezerra will be more careful next time no doubt.
Fernando keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Bezerra slips a jab and a cross from Fernando.
Bezerra is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Oh Bezerra is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Fernando closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Fernando stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Bezerra seems to have got his legs back now.

Fernando gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Bezerra tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Fernando smiles and moves away.

Fernando throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bezerra's waist but Bezerra gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Fernando off to one side.

Bezerra throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Fernando displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Bezerra.
Fernando slaps away a takedown attempt from Bezerra, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Fernando misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Bezerra wants to clinch but Fernando slips to the side
letting Fernando counter with a right hand.
The fight stays on the outside here - Bezerra looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Bezerra avoids a kick to the body.
Bezerra shoots in but no luck this time.
Fernando keeps the fight on the outside.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Bezerra throws a chopping leg kick but Fernando manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Fernando shoots in for a takedown but Bezerra shows good takedown defense.
Fernando blocks the body kick.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Fernando. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Bezerra is defended easily by Fernando.
Fernando throws a series of punches but Bezerra avoids them all with ease.
Bezerra shoots for a double leg takedown but Fernando sprawls well. He's pushed Bezerra's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Fernando tries a head kick but it misses.

and Fernando counters by clinching up.
Bezerra jumps guard but Fernando stands there with Bezerra around his waist. Bezerra gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Fernando jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Bezerra walks away with a smile on his face. Fernando gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Bezerra shoots in looking for a takedown. Fernando tries to sprawl out of it but Bezerra keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Fernando manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Fernando scores with a one two! Bezerra had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Fernando looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Fernando tries to pass to full mount but Bezerra defends it.
Fernando throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fernando is looking to take a break and control but Bezerra is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Bezerra has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Fernando is working away from the top position though.
Bezerra is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Bezerra moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Bezerra keeping moving, preventing Fernando from controlling successfully.
Bezerra looking to hit a scissor sweep but Fernando is one step ahead there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Luiz Fernando showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Fernando tries to bum rush Bezerra with a series of wild strikes but Bezerra uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Bezerra stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Fernando swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Bezerra is working hard here to advance position.
Bezerra slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Bezerra is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Fernando looks calm but he's in trouble here. Bezerra gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Fernando is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Bezerra lets go of the hold and Fernando can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:02 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Carlos Bezerra!
