PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Granite Stones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Damien Spider (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Granite Stones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Damien Spider!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Bruno Hogan and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice sprawl there from Stones as Spider shoots in.
Spider throws a nice looking combination but Stones bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Spider changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Stones tries to avoid it but Spider manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Stones to the ground. Stones escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Stones fails in his attempt to clinch.

Spider gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Stones to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Spider has a closed guard, preventing Stones from standing up.
Stones wants to pass the guard but Spider is keeping the position.
Stones is stalling in the full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stones throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Spider works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Spider being controlled here, momentarily.
Spider looking to control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Spider keeping full guard, as Stones tries to pass.
Stones is looking to stand up but Spider won't let him.
Stones wants to stand and escape but instead Spider has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Stones is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Spider is controlling him.
Stones wants to sweep but no luck.

Spider stands up from Stones's guard - Spider perhaps looking for a knockout.
Spider will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Granite Stones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Damien Spider.

Spider dives in and grabs Stones's left leg, looking for a takedown. Stones pushes down on Spider's head and hops out.
Stones looks for a takedown but Spider sprawls well.
Stones doesn't manage to clinch there - Spider circles away.
Spider misses with the combination.

Spider throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Stones tries to close the distance and clinch but Spider swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Stones's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Stones duly obliges.
Spider looks gassed!

Spider closes the distance and clinches up with Stones, looking for a takedown. Spider pushes Stones against the cage but Stones circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Spider throws a combination that misses

and Stones counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Stones not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Spider wants to stand and escape but Stones is having none of it.
Stones slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Granite Stones dominated that round.
That's time! Stones's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Spider misses with a takedown

and Stones counters with a nice double leg into side control. Spider won't be happy with that.
Spider is trying to control Stones's posture but Stones avoids it.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Stones cracks Spider with a big elbow.
Stones throws a strike aimed at the side of Spider's head but Spider avoids it well.
Spider is breathing heavily.
Stones tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Stones content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Stones tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Spider sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Stones slows the pace down in half guard.

Stones is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Stones drops an elbow to the side of Spider's head.
Stones wants to get back to his feet.
Stones perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Spider is refusing to be controlled, as Stones sits in half guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Granite Stones.
Stones shoots in for a double leg but Spider sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Spider moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Spider with a poor takedown

and Stones counters with a takedown into side control.
Stones wants to take a breather but Spider manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Stones.
Spider is trying to keep Stones in close.

Spider is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Stones defends well.
Stones trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Granite Stones dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Stones shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Spider but Spider pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Stones fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Granite Stones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Stones slaps away a takedown attempt from Spider, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Stones looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Spider shoots for a double leg takedown but Stones sprawls well. He's pushed Spider's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Damien Spider seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Horrible takedown by Spider or perhaps it was just good defense by Stones which made him look bad.
Spider tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Stones shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Stones showed some decent athleticism there.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Spider won't allow Stones to pass to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ground and pound from Stones.
Stones tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Spider is pressing down on Stones's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Spider trying to control the position.
Stones controlling from the top position.
Stones trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Stones is looking to stand up but Spider won't let him.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Spider lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Stones!
Spider trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Granite Stones overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Stones wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Spider.
Stones knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Spider on the ground.
Spider can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Stones is looking to escape.
Stones can't escape the position.
Stones on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Stones tries to get out of the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Stones tries to hold on but Spider pushes him away.
Stones working to try and regain half guard.
Spider can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Stones is looking to escape.
Spider landing strikes from the mount.
Spider tries to control but Stones wriggling away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Stones is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Damien Spider has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Granite Stones is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Spider looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Granite Stones.
Well Stones has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
