PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Roberto Kopite (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jokke Mela (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mela comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Da Rockwilder kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Roberto Kopite!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jokke Mela!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kopite gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Mela to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Mela trying to control the position from guard on top but Kopite is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kopite can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Mela controls the pace.
Mela trying to control but Kopite is working from the bottom.
Mela passes Kopite's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Mela stalling away here and it's allowed Kopite to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Mela stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kopite swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Mela is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Kopite really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Mela throws a big right hand that misses.
Mela wants to pass the guard but Kopite is keeping the position.
Kopite is adopting a defensive guard.
Mela trying to control the position from guard on top but Kopite is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Jab from Kopite.
Mela missing with a left hand there. Kopite was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Mela throws a head kick but Kopite moves out of range.
Kopite lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Mela circles away quickly and effectively.
Kopite waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Mela.
Mela takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

Kopite gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mela trying to control the position from guard on top but Kopite is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Mela might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Kopite kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jokke Mela was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Mela throws a jab but it's blocked by Kopite.
Mela throws a big shot that misses.
Kopite throws a head kick that misses.
Kopite moves out of range as Mela strikes.
Mela dodges the punch combination from Kopite.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mela shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kopite defends it nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Mela bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Mela uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Kopite.

and Mela takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Kopite is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kopite throws out a token jab with nothing on it.

Mela scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Kopite doesn't seem bothered though.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Mela lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Kopite circles away quickly and effectively.
Mela uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Kopite.
Mela throws an overhand right that lands on Kopite's shoulder, as Kopite tries to avoid the shot.
Kopite throws a jab when Mela was well out of range.
Mela shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Mela shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kopite defends it nicely.
Kopite misses with a low kick as Mela jumps back.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kopite rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Mela moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Mela fails to land the takedown.
Roberto Kopite has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jokke Mela.
A slow jab from Kopite misses its intended target.
Mela tries to clinch but Kopite moves out of range.
Kopite throws a jab but it's blocked by Mela.

Mela lands a glancing blow to the side of Kopite's head.
Kopite steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Mela.
Mela fails with the takedown
and Kopite counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Kopite closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Kopite defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mela.
Kopite feints and then cracks Mela's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Mela down.

Mela rushes Kopite and presses him up against the cage.
Mela gets underhooks to prevent Kopite's takedown attempt.

Kopite blocks a body shot from Mela.
Kopite fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Mela blocks the elbow strike.
A short left from Mela.
Mela has Kopite pressed against the cage.
Mela is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent.

Mela escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Jokke Mela seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mela shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Kopite counters with a low kick, right behind Mela 's knee.
Mela is breathing heavily.
Mela shoots in for a takedown but Kopite shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Good exchange - Mela coming out on top.
Roberto Kopite is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mela uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Kopite.
Kopite misses with the combination.

That was a close second round but I would say that Roberto Kopite will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Kopite misses with an uppercut. Mela saw that one coming.
Kopite moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Mela misses with a double jab
letting Kopite counter with a right hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Mela fails in his attempt to clinch.
Kopite lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mela walks into a straight right hand from Kopite.
Mela tries for a takedown but Kopite sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Mela thows a left - swing and a miss!
Mela throws a jab when Kopite was well out of range.

Kopite scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Kopite manages to regain half guard whilst avoiding the strikes.

Mela is working for a submission of some sort.
Mela wants to free his trapped foot but Kopite is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Mela prevents Kopite from improving his position.
Mela stalling away here and it's allowed Kopite to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Mela wants to control from the top but Kopite keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Kopite wants to get back to his feet but Mela is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Mela is looking to work some ground and pound but Kopite has wrist control.
Mela stays in close to Kopite's body and controls the position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jokke Mela hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
A big left from Kopite misses.
A swing and a miss from Mela.
Kopite uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Mela.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kopite moves out of range as Mela strikes.
Mela fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Jokke Mela.
I think Mela has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
