PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rickson Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matiss Briedis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rua's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, drop the world. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rickson Rua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Matiss Briedis!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Viktor Lagutenko and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rua gets caught flat footed, as Briedis shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Rua controls Briedis momentarily but Briedis frees himself.

Rua looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Briedis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rua. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Briedis in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Rua trying to keep a closed guard but Briedis is proving a slippery customer.
Briedis with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Rua is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Briedis shoots in but Rua avoids the takedown attempt easily.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Briedis can do anything to dispel that myth.
Rua lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Briedis has given up his back, trying to stand up. Not clever.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.

Briedis is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Rua off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.
Rua's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Briedis is taking damage to the body and head.

Briedis controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Rua closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Briedis to the mat! Briedis manages to get full guard.
Rua's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Rua passes into half guard.
Rua stops Briedis from getting back to his feet.
Rickson Rua overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Rua works his foot free and advances to mount.

Briedis is breathing heavily.

Rua with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Briedis takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Rua takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Rua lands a shot to the head.
Rua lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Briedis hold on?!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Rickson Rua.
Rua tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Briedis paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Rua darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Rua decides to stand and escape the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Rua looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Rua seems to be working for a kimura but Briedis defends the submission attempt.

Briedis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Rua works his way into side control.

Rua thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Rua is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Briedis knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Rua prevents Briedis from escaping the position.
Briedis is trying to escape the position but Rua is controlling the position.

Rua happy to just control the position for now.

Rua has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Rua feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Rua is working close to his opponent, looking to work a submission by the looks of things. Oh, he's managed to get a guillotine from mount as his opponent reached up! That looks tiiiiight! Will he tap? YES, he's tapped! Impressive submission by Rua!
