PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ceino Rey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Shepherd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Ceino Rey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, John Shepherd!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Matti Vanhoillinen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shepherd fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Rey connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Shepherd momentarily.
Shepherd uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Rey.
Rey throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Rey throws a hook but Shepherd avoids it easily.
Rey misses with a straight right.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Shepherd dodges the punch combination from Rey.
Shepherd avoids a punch combination nicely.
No luck for Shepherd with that takedown attempt.
Shepherd shoots for a takedown but Rey saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Ceino Rey has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Shepherd.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Horrible takedown by Shepherd or perhaps it was just good defense by Rey which made him look bad.
Rey swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Shepherd staying out of range there.
Ceino Rey is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Rey throws a hook to the side of Shepherd's head but Shepherd sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Shepherd uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Rey.
Shepherd fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Rey closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Rey moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Shepherd shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Shepherd postures up in Rey's guard and throws a big left but Rey blocks it.
Shepherd pushing down on Rey's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Rey tries to kick Shepherd off but Shepherd keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Shepherd lands with a punch from half guard.
Shepherd not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Rey won't allow Shepherd to pass to mount.
Rey avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Shepherd.
Shepherd landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Shepherd throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shepherd is working for a submission of some sort.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ceino Rey dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Rey throws a series of punches but Shepherd moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Shepherd is defended easily by Rey.

Rey looks to score with a jab to the body but Shepherd is just out of range.
Rey fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Shepherd manages to avoid it.
Rey cracks Shepherd with an open hand slap.
Rey misses with a straight right.

Shepherd uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Rey.
Shepherd shoots in looking for a takedown. Rey tries to sprawl out of it but Shepherd keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Rey manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Shepherd slips a jab and a cross from Rey.

Ceino Rey has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Shepherd.
Rey throws a right and a left that both miss.
Rey tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Shepherd was well out of range. Poor timing from Rey.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Rey throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Nice uppercut there from Rey.
Ceino Rey is winning the standup battle so far.
Rey looks to land a combination but Shepherd avoids it well.
Rey swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shepherd shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Rey defends it nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ceino Rey dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Rey is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Shepherd.

Shepherd scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rey takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Rey wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Rey takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Shepherd has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Rey is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Shepherd yanks on the arm and Rey is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Shepherd.
