PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rod Quantock (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Hammer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hammer has chosen Deftones - Prince as his entrance music. Tony Hammer is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rod Quantock!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tony Hammer!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, John Mangel and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Quantock stuffs the takedown.
Hammer shoots in for a takedown but Quantock shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Quantock dodges the punch combination from Hammer.
Hammer throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Tony Hammer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hammer shoots for a takedown but Quantock saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Rod Quantock has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tony Hammer.

Quantock gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Hammer stops Quantock from standing up.
Quantock seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Hammer is stalling in the full guard.
Hammer trying to control but Quantock is working from the bottom.

Quantock utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Quantock is looking to stand up but Hammer isn't so interested in that idea.
Hammer throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Quantock works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hammer pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Quantock is keeping the position for now.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Hammer shoots in looking for a takedown. Quantock tries to sprawl out of it but Hammer keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Quantock manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Quantock swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Hammer counters with a big head kick but Quantock shrugs it off.

Quantock is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Hammer's half guard.

Quantock with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Hammer wants to improve his position but Quantock is controlling well.
Quantock slows the pace down in half guard.
Quantock wants to control but Hammer is keeping him busy.

Hammer is trying to maintain the position but Quantock is very close to passing his half guard.
Quantock looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Hammer tries to roll over but Quantock keeps him under control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hammer doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Quantock decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hammer's guard.

Hammer has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Quantock is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Hammer.

Hammer manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

and Quantock counters with a single leg into guard. Hammer didn't expect that.
Quantock looking to sit in guard and control but Hammer gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Quantock has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Hammer is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Quantock.

and Quantock counters with a nice double leg into side control. Hammer won't be happy with that.
You can see the frustration on Hammer's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Hammer is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Quantock jumps into side control!

Quantock looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hammer tries to improve position but can't.
Hammer is trying to control Quantock's posture but Quantock avoids it.

Quantock tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Quantock has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Hammer has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Hammer scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Rod Quantock overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hammer wants to take a breather but Quantock manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Hammer.

Quantock is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Hammer is controlling him.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


A head kick from Hammer lands but Quantock takes it in his stride.
Quantock tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Hammer paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Hammer shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Quantock counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Quantock controlling the pace.
Hammer is looking to improve his position.
Hammer won't allow Quantock to pass to mount.
Quantock takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Hammer has his hands clasped together around Quantock's back. He's all about the action.
Hammer wants to get back to his feet.

Quantock looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Hammer is trying to control but Quantock passes into side control!
Quantock content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Quantock tries to move to mount but Hammer blocks the move with his legs.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hammer is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Quantock decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hammer's guard.
Quantock scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Quantock pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hammer is keeping the position for now.
Hammer is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Hammer can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Quantock controls the pace.
Quantock might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Hammer is trying to stand up here but Quantock is controlling him well.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Hammer wants to control but Quantock is keeping busy.

Quantock stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hammer swivels though and keeps the full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rod Quantock showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Quantock, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
