PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Damien William (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Smart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smart has chosen Billy Talent - Red Flag as his entrance music. Paul Smart will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Damien William!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Paul Smart!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Gregory Folan and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smart shoots in and drives through. William sprawls well.
Smart tries to clinch but William moves out of range.
William slaps away a takedown attempt from Smart, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Smart misses with a two punch combination.
Smart misses with a body kick.
Smart misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Damien William has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Smart.
Smart shoots in and drives through. William sprawls well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smart misses with a two punch combination.

William shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than William was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Smart is squirming around, avoiding William's attempts to control the action.

Smart squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.

William is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Smart to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Smart shrugs it off.

William working for a guillotine from mount but Smart is in no mood to give up.

William goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Smart turns into him and now he's in William's guard.

William controls Smart momentarily but Smart frees himself.

William has his foot on Smart's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Smart works his way back into a safe position though.
Smart scoring with punches to the head and body.

William looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

William is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Smart defends well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
William keeping moving, preventing Smart from controlling successfully.
Smart controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Smart wants to control from the top but William keeps moving.

William is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Smart is aware though and is defending well.
Smart controls from within his opponent's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Smart trying to control the position from guard on top but William is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Paul Smart hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Smart bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Smart cracks William with a big right hand but William just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
William is looking to regain half guard here but Smart keeps moving and retains side control.
William wants to control but Smart postures up.
Smart is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt William will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
William regains half guard.
Smart tries to pass to full mount but William defends it.
William blocking the ground and pound attempt from Smart.
William is staying active underneath Smart, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
William is looking for a sweep. Smart is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Damien William will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Smart ducks down and throws a hook to the body but William moves away.
William circles away from the clinch attempt.
Smart looks to land a combination. William sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Smart has his takedown stuffed

and William counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
William is trying to control. Smart wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Smart pushes William off but William dives into side control.

William thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
William wants to take a breather but Smart manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for William.

That's one minute gone in the round.
William trying to control the position from guard on top but Smart is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
William sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Smart's guard.

William is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
William seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

William is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Smart sees it coming and defends easily.
William is stalling here. Smart is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! William seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Smart has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Smart decides to stand back up.
Paul Smart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smart darts in trying to clinch

and William counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

William is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

William is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Smart is just riding it out for now. William eventually gives up the hold.

William is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smart doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time William.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
William is just content to waste time from the top position. Smart takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Smart preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
William tries to free his leg and advance position but Smart is retaining full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Damien William dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


William stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and William wants it to stay on the feet.

Smart wants to stand but William is controlling the position.
William wants to control from the top but Smart keeps moving.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
William passes Smart's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
William seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Smart does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
William tries to pass to full mount but Smart defends it.
William looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Smart is trying to stand.
Smart takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

William is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Paul Smart has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Damien William overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
William wants to control but Smart is keeping him busy.
William throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

William is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Smart defends it well.
William is looking to advance position but Smart won't allow it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Smart tries to kick William off but William keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Damien William showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for William, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
