PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Phal Um (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phal Um!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, David King!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Ian Loll and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice defenses there by King.
Um moves out of range of the leg kick from King.
Um walks into a stiff left hand from King.
King misses with a wild combination.

Um scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
King is trying to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
King sneaks back into half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Um lands a nice short elbow.
King is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
King is looking to get back to full guard here but Um has managed to pass to side control instead.
Um putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
Um looking to control and managing it successfully.

King is desperately trying to improve his position but Um has a good base and remains in mount.
Um controlling the position easily from mount.
BOOM! Um connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Um controlling from the full mount.
King is in all sorts of trouble here.
Um tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Um punishing his opponent with strikes.
Um is landing with some decent strikes but King is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Um seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down King for as long as he can get away with.

King moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
King wants to sweep here but Um controlling him for the moment.

King trying his best to control but Um has mounted him.
King is desperately trying to improve his position but Um has a good base and remains in mount.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Um tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Um connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

Um sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Um has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phal Um dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Um lands a jab to the nose.
Um clobbers King with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
King swings for the body but Um moves out of range.
Some wild striking there from King.
No joy there for King, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
King throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Um holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Um scores with an uppercut up the middle.
King tries to break the clinch but Um is controlling the position.
Um lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of King backwards.
King can't break the clinch.
Um lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of King backwards.
King prevents Um from breaking the clinch.

Um manages to break the clinch.
King misses with a double jab.
King misses with a combination
and Um cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.


King is rocked!
Um digs a good hook to King's body.
King is breathing heavily.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Um, as that shot connected.
Um punishes King's body with a nice straight punch.
Phal Um is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Um shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Um controlling the position easily from mount.
Um lands with some strikes.

Um looking to control and managing it successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
King is trying desperately to improve position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Um content just to control the position here.
King is in all sorts of trouble here.
Um controlling from the full mount.
Um's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The referee warns King that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

King is wriggling around trying to escape.
King is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Phal Um just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Um scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Um closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Um throws a series of strikes that have King backpedaling.
Um slips under a jab from King.

King tries to work over Um's front leg with a kick but Um checks it.
David King is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
King throws a poor cross that misses
and Um connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
King misses with a shot to the body

and Um decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in King's guard.
Um is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
King is striking but Um is not phased and passes to half guard.
King manages to get to full guard.
Um pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. King is keeping the position for now.
King is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Um controls from within his opponent's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phal Um dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


King connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
King scoring well with a low kick there.
King throws a nice looking combination but Um bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
King takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Um feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

David King has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well Um has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
