PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tex Ranger (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Edson Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ranger comes into the arena with Eaten by Bloodbath blaring out of the sound system. Mendes has chosen Hard Hittaz by Three 6 Mafia as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tex Ranger!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Edson Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Daniel Cesar and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ranger slaps away a takedown attempt from Mendes, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Mendes fails with an attempt to clinch.
Mendes doesn't manage to clinch there - Ranger circles away.
Mendes misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Ranger misses with a straight right.
Ranger scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Ranger loads up on a big right hand but Mendes slips the punch.
Edson Mendes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ranger pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Mendes throws a head kick but Ranger moves out of range.
Ranger swings and misses with a hook to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Ranger leaves Mendes with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

and Ranger counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Ranger wants to work for an arm triangle but Mendes is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Ranger passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Mendes!

Ranger is working for a guillotine from mount but Mendes frees his head quite easily.

Ranger is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Mendes to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Mendes shrugs it off.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ranger takes Mendes's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Mendes is in trouble.

Mendes is keeping busy.

Ranger is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Ranger is trying to stick to Mendes's back but Mendes is turning into Ranger. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Ranger's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Mendes.

Ranger manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mendes manages to get himself to full guard.

Ranger is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Mendes is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mendes has his foot on Ranger's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ranger works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Mendes wants to sweep but no luck.
Ranger stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mendes swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Ranger is trying to control the action in half guard but Mendes is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Ranger is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Mendes is just riding it out for now. Ranger eventually gives up the hold.

Ranger is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Mendes has managed to free his arm - good work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mendes has his takedown stuffed
and Ranger counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Ranger tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Mendes was well out of range. Poor timing from Ranger.

Ranger slips a jab and a cross from Mendes.
Ranger fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Mendes manages to avoid it.
Ranger lands a nice shot to the body.
Ranger lunges at Mendes with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Mendes's hand.

Ranger fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mendes sprawls well initially but Ranger persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Ranger swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Mendes is now in Ranger's guard. A big mistake from Ranger there, giving up the dominant position!

Ranger postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Mendes is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ranger, into his guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Mendes is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Tex Ranger is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Ranger wants to control from the top but Mendes keeps moving.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Edson Mendes is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Ranger scores with a hook to the body. Mendes takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Edson Mendes comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Ranger has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
