Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Boris Kovalow (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Tanaka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mike Tanaka!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kovalow tries to clinch but Tanaka moves out of range.

Kovalow tries to sprawl but Tanaka drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Tanaka trying to control the action but Kovalow is working from the bottom.
Kovalow tries to get to full guard but Tanaka has control of the leg.
Tanaka tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Kovalow.
Tanaka perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Mike Tanaka wasn't active enough on the ground.

Kovalow is looking for a triangle but Tanaka pushes his legs off easily.

Tanaka is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kovalow working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Tanaka doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Tanaka manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Kovalow gets caught flat footed, as Tanaka shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Tanaka shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Kovalow manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Tanaka is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Tanaka tries to free his leg and advance position but Kovalow is retaining full guard.
Kovalow wants to sweep but no luck.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Tanaka shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Tanaka was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Tanaka lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Kovalow is in all sorts of trouble here.
Tanaka pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kovalow is bucking up trying to escape but Tanaka cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Tanaka cracks Kovalow with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Kovalow is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Tanaka lands a big shot there that rocks Kovalow but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Tanaka looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Kovalow tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Tanaka postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Kovalow looks a forlorn figure.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Tanaka showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Tanaka feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Tanaka stands up over his opponent, looking to dive in with a big punch. Here he comes, superman style! Oh, the punch misses and Kovalow has got him in a triangle choke for good measure! Oh no! Tanaka manages to get his head free but now Kovalow has transitioned to an armbar! Tanaka grimaces and is forced to tap! Beautiful Jiu Jitsu from Kovalow! I'd be surprised if that didn't end up as submission of the night!
