PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Aleksander Shlemenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cosmos Ivanov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aleksander Shlemenko looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Aleksander Shlemenko!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Cosmos Ivanov!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Igor Prikhodko and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shlemenko wants to land a leg kick but Ivanov is out of range.

Ivanov fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Shlemenko sprawls well initially but Ivanov persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Ivanov tries to pass the half guard into mount. Shlemenko knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Ivanov is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Shlemenko defends it well.

Ivanov is working for a submission of some sort.
Ivanov not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Ivanov is trying to work for a kimura but Shlemenko is defending well.

Ivanov throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Ivanov is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Shlemenko is just riding it out for now. Ivanov eventually gives up the hold.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Ivanov postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Shlemenko is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ivanov, into his guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Ivanov looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cosmos Ivanov dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Ivanov doesn't manage to clinch there - Shlemenko circles away.
Shlemenko connects with a looping right hand.
Ivanov is trying hard to land a takedown here. Shlemenko sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Ivanov tries to clinch but Shlemenko moves out of range.
Shlemenko looks to land a combination but Ivanov avoids it well.
Ivanov fails with a takedown attempt.
Ivanov throws a left and a right that both miss
and Shlemenko counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Ivanov avoids a punch combination nicely.

and Ivanov counters by moving into the clinch.

Ivanov just leaning against Shlemenko, taking a breather.

Ivanov manages to pull guard.
Shlemenko has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Ivanov looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Shlemenko has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Ivanov is proving hard to escape from.

Shlemenko got a little sloppy there for a moment and Ivanov has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Shlemenko has managed to get both his arms back between Ivanov's legs - danger averted.

Ivanov wriggles free and stands up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

and Ivanov counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Ivanov pushes down on Shlemenko's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Ivanov passes to side control.

Ivanov has knee on belly momentarily but Shlemenko bucks him off and regains half guard.
Ivanov slows the pace down in half guard.

Ivanov is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Ivanov looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Ivanov is trying to work for a kimura but Shlemenko is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ivanov is figuring out what he wants to do next.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cosmos Ivanov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Ivanov tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Shlemenko swivels and escapes.

and Ivanov holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Ivanov wants the takedown. Shlemenko is fighting it off but Ivanov persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Shlemenko's guard against the cage.
Ivanov wants to control from the top but Shlemenko keeps moving.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Ivanov trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Ivanov passes easily into side control. Nice work.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Ivanov is working to tighten is grip on Shlemenko's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Shlemenko has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Ivanov is really squeezing tight and eventually Shlemenko passes out! Ivanov breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:38 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Cosmos Ivanov!
