PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jims Second (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Masaru Hirai (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hirai has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Masaru Hirai told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jims Second!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Masaru Hirai!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Second misses with a kick to the body.
Second slaps away a takedown attempt from Hirai, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Hirai rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Second moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Masaru Hirai seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Second clinches up with Hirai and pushes him back against the cage.
Second has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Hirai is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Second has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Hirai uses from the top position.
Second on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Second tries to get out of the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Second is taking a breather. Hirai says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Second wants to pass to mount but Hirai is defending the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Jims Second just wasn't active enough.
Hirai misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Second rushes Hirai and presses him up against the cage.
Second misses with a hook to the ribs.

Second turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Second in side control, just content to control the action for now.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Second cracks Hirai with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Second is putting a hurting on Hirai here, landing some big shots from side control.
The referee asks Second politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Second prefers to stall for the moment though.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Second remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Second lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Hirai down.
The referee asks Second politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Second prefers to stall for the moment though.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Second's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Second wants to work for an arm triangle but Hirai is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Second is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hirai is just riding it out for now. Second eventually gives up the hold.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Second is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Hirai really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Second. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Second perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Second has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Hirai is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Hirai is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Second is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Hirai knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Second is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hirai can do to turn this around?

That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Second throws a push kick but Hirai slaps the foot to one side.

Second misses with a looping right.
Hirai throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Second darts in and clinches Hirai up against the cage.

Second ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Second no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Hirai won't allow Second to sweep him here.

Second scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Second will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Second swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Second throws a half hearted mid kick.

Second feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Second pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Second fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Jims Second is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Second is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Hirai can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hirai takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Jims Second showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Second has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
