PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kari Tapio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hoelie Gan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tapio kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Cannibal Corpse. Hoelie Gan has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kari Tapio!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Hoelie Gan!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Patrick Alders and Aafke Stam.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tapio throws out a token jab with nothing on it.

Gan feints and as Tapio raises his hands in defense, Gan changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Tapio escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gan gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Gan slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Tapio keeping moving, preventing Gan from controlling successfully.

Gan is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Gan wants to control from the top but Tapio keeps moving.
Gan sitting in guard here, content to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Tapio working for a triangle but Gan defends it easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Tapio looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Gan sitting in guard here, content to control.
Gan wants to control from the top but Tapio keeps moving.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Tapio can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Gan controls the pace.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Hoelie Gan wasn't active enough on the ground.
Tapio misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Gan shoots in and gets a takedown into Tapio's guard.
Tapio being controlled here, momentarily.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Gan wants to control from the top but Tapio keeps moving.

Gan is stalling in the full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Hoelie Gan was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Gan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Tapio's waist but Tapio gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gan off to one side.
Gan shoots for a takedown but Tapio saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

and Gan counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gan controlling the pace.
Gan uses his free foot to push down on Tapio's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Tapio.
Tapio has given up his back here. Will Gan look for the submission or keep pounding away?

Gan is looking for a choke. Tapio gets to his feet with his opponent on his back and slams him to the mat. Tapio manages to squirm out of the attempted choke and turns into his opponent's guard.
Tapio working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Tapio is fighting to break Gan's control of his arms but Gan is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Tapio loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Gan is looking for a triangle but Tapio pushes his legs off easily.
Tapio won't allow Gan to sweep him here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hoelie Gan dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Gan misses with a takedown attempt
and Tapio counters with a good, hard body kick but Gan shrugs it off.
Gan circles away from the clinch attempt

and Gan counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Tapio's guard now.
Gan prevents Tapio from getting back to his feet.
Tapio might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Gan stays in close to Tapio's body and controls the position.
Gan trying to control but Tapio is working from the bottom.
Gan not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Hoelie Gan.
Tapio thows a body shot but no joy.
Gan tries for a takedown but Tapio circles away easily
and Tapio counters with a thumping low kick.
Tapio throws a wild body kick that Gan sees coming a mile off.
Gan misses with a takedown
and Tapio counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Kari Tapio has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hoelie Gan.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Tapio misses with an attempted mid kick.
Gan doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Tapio counters with a shoot takedown. Gan fights it but they end up in guard.
Tapio with a flurry of punches that miss.

Gan looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Tapio drops back looking for a leg! Gan is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Gan manages to kick Tapio off! Tapio jumps back into Gan's guard.
Gan controls Tapio momentarily but Tapio frees himself.

Tapio drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Gan dives on top into guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gan in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Gan trying to control the position from guard on top but Tapio is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Tapio is trying to keep Gan in close.
Gan controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Gan is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Tapio is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Gan is aware though and is defending well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gan looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Gan stands and steps away. Tapio gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Gan avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Tapio throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Gan sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Gan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Tapio decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Gan's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Kari Tapio will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Tapio darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Gan makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Gan.
Gan keeping moving, preventing Tapio from controlling successfully.
Gan not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Gan is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Tapio is aware though and is defending well.

Tapio drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Gan manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Tapio has Gan in his guard.
Gan controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Let's hope that Gan has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Gan decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Gan misses with a takedown attempt - Tapio sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Gan closes the distance and clinches up with Tapio, looking for a takedown. Gan pushes Tapio against the cage but Tapio circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Tapio is looking to land body kicks.
Kari Tapio seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Tapio doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Gan counters with a takedown into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gan wants to control but Tapio is keeping him busy.
Tapio is trying to control Gan's posture but Gan avoids it.

Gan has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Tapio is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Gan yanks on the arm and Tapio is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Gan.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:43 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Hoelie Gan!
