PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Devin Gillis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Josh Cowen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Josh Cowen told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Devin Gillis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Josh Cowen!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Anthony Taglia and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cowen looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Cowen throws a low kick but Gillis avoids it.
Gillis tries for a takedown but Cowen circles away easily
and Cowen counters with a one-two to the body.

Cowen instigates a clinch.
Gillis goes for a takedown in the clinch but Cowen prevents it.

Gillis has picked Cowen up - he's going for a ride! Gillis dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gillis tries to pass to full mount but Cowen defends it.
Cowen looks like he's trying to stand up.
Cowen moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gillis looking to sit in guard and control but Cowen gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gillis wants to sweep here but Cowen controlling him for the moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gillis is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Gillis working for submissions but it's allowed Cowen to get to half guard.
Cowen wants to take a breather but Gillis is having none of it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gillis is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Gillis is working hard here to advance position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Gillis makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Cowen has his takedown stuffed

and Gillis counters with a nice double leg into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Gillis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

and Cowen counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Cowen gets underhooks to prevent Gillis's takedown attempt.
Gillis tries for a takedown. No joy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Devin Gillis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gillis drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Cowen gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Gillis is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cowen fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Gillis tries to score a body lock takedown but Cowen shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Cowen prevents the takedown attempt.

Cowen wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gillis has him pressed against the cage.

Cowen breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Cowen throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gillis.
No joy there for Cowen, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Cowen drives through with a takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Gillis looking for a sweep. Not yet Gillis, not yet.
Cowen wants to stand but Gillis has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cowen looking to sit in guard and control but Gillis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Gillis tries to free his leg and advance position but Cowen is retaining full guard.

Cowen stands up and waves to Gillis to follow him.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Cowen throws the left hand but Gillis avoids the punch easily.

Gillis decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Cowen can do anything to dispel that myth.
Gillis is looking to take a break and control but Cowen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Gillis not doing much here.
Cowen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gillis. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Gillis is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Josh Cowen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Cowen moves in looking to clinch but Gillis pushes him off.
Cowen throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Gillis shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Cowen counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Cowen wants to stand but Gillis is controlling his posture from full guard.
Gillis is pulling down on Cowen's head. It's preventing any offense from Cowen, at least for the moment.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gillis is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Cowen being controlled here momentarily.

Cowen gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gillis is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Cowen misses with a two punch combination.

Cowen scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Gillis is looking for a sweep.
Gillis gets back to half guard.
It looks like Cowen is going to stand back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gillis works his way to full guard. Good work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Josh Cowen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Cowen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
