PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dakota Finley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Makoto Kawamoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Finley comes to the cage accompanied by Bad Company. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Dakota Finley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Makoto Kawamoto!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Hirohito Nitta and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kawamoto gets a takedown into half guard.
Finley trying to control from the bottom.
Finley tries to roll over but Kawamoto keeps him under control.
Kawamoto with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Kawamoto wants to control but Finley is keeping him busy.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Makoto Kawamoto hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Kawamoto changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Finley tries to avoid it but Kawamoto manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Finley to the ground. Finley escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Finley closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kawamoto did well to prevent Finley getting side control.

Kawamoto makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Kawamoto.

Finley has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kawamoto is proving hard to escape from.
Kawamoto has control of Finley's left arm, preventing Finley from doing any damage.
Finley throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Kawamoto looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Finley won't allow Kawamoto to get back to his feet.
Kawamoto seems keen to control Finley's posture.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kawamoto tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Kawamoto keeping moving, preventing Finley from controlling successfully.
Finley has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Makoto Kawamoto wasn't active enough on the ground.

and Finley counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Kawamoto!
Kawamoto really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Finley. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Finley has control of Kawamoto's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Kawamoto regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Finley with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Kawamoto is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

Kawamoto wants to control but Finley is having none of it.

Finley jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Kawamoto manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Finley decides to stand up, so the ref orders Kawamoto to his feet.

Kawamoto looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kawamoto thows a huge punch but Finley dodges it nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dakota Finley dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Finley tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Kawamoto paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Kawamoto shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Finley's guard.
Kawamoto wants to control from the top but Finley keeps moving.
Finley on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Finley tries to get out of the position.
Finley utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Finley is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Kawamoto must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Finley pushes Kawamoto off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Finley changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Kawamoto looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Finley misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Finley cracks Kawamoto with an elbow. That is naaassty.

Kawamoto prevents Finley from moving into mount.
Kawamoto is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Finley has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Finley throws an elbow but Kawamoto slips to the side and avoids it well.
Finley throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kawamoto is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Kawamoto is working to avoid the ground and pound but Finley connects with a decent elbow.
Finley is chipping away with strikes.
Finley tries to score with some ground and pound. Kawamoto controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Finley is looking to take a break and control but Kawamoto is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Dakota Finley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Makoto Kawamoto.

Finley clinches up with Kawamoto and pushes him back against the cage.

Finley is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Kawamoto can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Kawamoto wants to control but Finley is having none of it.
Kawamoto takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Makoto Kawamoto has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Dakota Finley is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well Finley has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
