PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Noy Kulas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Abel Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kulas comes to the cage accompanied by Paano ang puso ko kung wala ka.. Abel Velasquez will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Noy Kulas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Abel Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Dean Styles and Eddie Farnsworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Velasquez rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Kulas moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Velasquez wants to clinch.

Kulas gets the takedown into side control.

Kulas goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Velasquez has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Kulas but great work by Velasquez.
Kulas parries the strikes from Velasquez easily there. Velasquez is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Kulas to escape.
Kulas is trying to get back to half guard.
Velasquez trying to control the action but Kulas is working from the bottom.
Velasquez misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Velasquez in side control, throwing shots but Kulas defends.

Velasquez is looking to take a break and control but Kulas is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Kulas tries to bench press Velasquez off him but Velasquez keeps the position.

Kulas is trying to control Velasquez's posture but Velasquez avoids it.
Kulas manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Velasquez working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Velasquez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kulas. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Velasquez seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Velasquez wants to work for an arm triangle but Kulas is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Velasquez avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Velasquez with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kulas avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Kulas escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Velasquez gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Velasquez throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Kulas looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Kulas trying to keep a closed guard but Velasquez is proving a slippery customer.
Kulas is breathing heavily.
Kulas manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Velasquez manages to get himself to full guard.

Kulas postures up.
Kulas trying to control the position from guard on top but Velasquez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kulas works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Kulas seems to be looking for submissions.
Velasquez wants to improve his position but Kulas is controlling well.

Kulas seems to be working for a kimura but Velasquez defends the submission attempt.
Velasquez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Velasquez manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Kulas shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kulas fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Velasquez lands with a shot to the body.
Kulas tries to score with a low kick but Velasquez moves his leg out of the way.
Kulas throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Velasquez's waist but Velasquez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kulas off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Noy Kulas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Velasquez tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Kulas manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Kulas shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Velasquez as he jumps to the side.

Velasquez clinches up with Kulas and pushes him back against the cage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Kulas's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Velasquez has Kulas pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Kulas manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Abel Velasquez dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Kulas dives in and grabs Velasquez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Velasquez pushes down on Kulas's head and hops out.
Velasquez misses with a few strikes there.
Kulas shoots in looking for a takedown. Velasquez tries to sprawl out of it but Kulas keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Velasquez manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Kulas is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Kulas swats away the attempt to clinch by Velasquez.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kulas has a takedown stuffed.

Kulas avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Velasquez fails with a takedown attempt.
Velasquez tries to clinch but Kulas is having none of it.
Kulas throws a jab but it's blocked by Velasquez.
Abel Velasquez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Kulas attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Kulas drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Velasquez looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Kulas drops back looking for a leg! Velasquez is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Velasquez manages to kick Kulas off! Kulas jumps back into Velasquez's guard.

Kulas is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kulas lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Velasquez wants to get back to his feet.
Kulas wants to lay and pray for a moment but Velasquez keeps working.
Noy Kulas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Velasquez is looking to escape.

Kulas is nestled in close to Velasquez, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Kulas is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Velasquez is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
