PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gunner Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jarrod Wyatt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Gunner Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jarrod Wyatt!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Anni Minnemäki and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith looks to land a right hand but Wyatt moved out of range.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Smith enables Wyatt to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Smith manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Smith being controlled here, momentarily.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Wyatt avoids the body shot from Smith.

Smith throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Wyatt keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Wyatt closes the distance and pushes Smith back into the cage.

Wyatt turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Wyatt manages to end up in side control.
Smith is looking for a sweep.

Wyatt has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Wyatt rushes Smith and presses him up against the cage.

Wyatt pulls Smith into guard.
Wyatt looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jarrod Wyatt wasn't active enough on the ground.

Wyatt looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Smith!

Wyatt looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Wyatt lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Smith wants to hold on but Wyatt pushes him away.
Smith is in all sorts of trouble here.

Wyatt gets a clinch.

Wyatt tightens his grip and picks Smith up, before dumping him to the ground. Smith manages to land in guard.
Wyatt with a flurry of punches that miss.
Wyatt working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Wyatt gets to his feet. Smith looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Wyatt feints and as Smith raises his hands in defense, Wyatt changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Wyatt won't allow Smith to sweep him here.
Wyatt is pushing down on Smith's leg trying to pass to half guard. Smith is fighting to maintain full guard but Wyatt has managed to sneak the leg through.

Smith pushes Wyatt off looking to stand but Wyatt dives back in and keeps control.
Wyatt with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Wyatt moves into full mount! Smith won't be happy about that!
Smith wants to hold on but Wyatt pushes him away.
Wyatt sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Smith taking shots to the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wyatt is standing up, even though he is in mount.

Smith gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Smith looking to hit a scissor sweep but Wyatt is one step ahead there.
Wyatt not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith wants to improve his position but instead Wyatt has moved into half guard.

Wyatt escapes and gets back to his feet.
Wyatt throws a right hand that Smith ducks under and follows up with a left that Smith also avoids with ease.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Wyatt.
Wyatt is working Smith over with some ground and pound from side control.
Wyatt really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Wyatt controlling the position from side mount.

Wyatt decides to stand up, so the ref orders Smith to his feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Wyatt.

Wyatt shoots in and gets a takedown into Smith's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Wyatt passes Smith's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Wyatt with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jarrod Wyatt showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Wyatt is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Smith's half guard.
Still in half guard, Wyatt seems content to control.
Smith is looking for a sweep. Wyatt is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Wyatt is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Let's hope that Wyatt has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Wyatt is working for a submission of some sort.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Wyatt postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Smith to stand up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Wyatt connects with a high kick.
Danga de danga de dang - Wyatt scores with a four punch combination!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Wyatt breaks the clinch.

Wyatt gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Smith tries to pull guard but Wyatt won't allow it.
Wyatt lands a shot to the body.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Wyatt gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Smith regains guard.
Wyatt in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Wyatt seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Wyatt is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jarrod Wyatt.

Smith tries to keep at a distance but Wyatt has taken the fight into the clinch.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Wyatt is trying to trip Smith. He has hold of a leg but Smith is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Wyatt persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Smith avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Wyatt is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Smith is working an open guard so Wyatt takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Smith thows a body shot but no joy.
Smith shoots and misses

and Wyatt decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smith's guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Wyatt gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Gunner Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jarrod Wyatt is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Smith gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Wyatt decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smith's guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jarrod Wyatt comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Wyatt has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
