PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between David Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dana Hodges (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, David Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Dana Hodges!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Wagner Zegers and Daniel Blasius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith misses with a lunging right hand
and Hodges counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Smith gets off balance looking for a body kick
and Hodges connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Smith looks to score with a jab to the body but Hodges is just out of range.
Smith tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Hodges manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Smith has Hodges up against the cage in a clinch.
Hodges tries to score a body lock takedown but Smith shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Hodges breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Smith throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Smith scores with a shot to the body.
Smith throws the kick towards the body but Hodges avoids it.
Smith throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Smith takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Hodges gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Smith counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.


It looks like Dana Hodges has been cut.

Smith moves into range and clinches up with Hodges.
Hodges misses with an elbow over the top.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Smith doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Hodges counters with an outside leg kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith missing with a left hand there. Hodges was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Smith misses with a combination

and Hodges counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Hodges not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Hodges tries to pass to full mount but Smith defends it.
Smith on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Smith tries to get out of the position.
Smith pushes Hodges off looking to stand but Hodges dives back in and keeps control.
Hodges drops an elbow to the side of Smith's head.

Hodges wants to work for an arm triangle but Smith is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Ground and pound from Hodges.
Smith tries to kick Hodges off but Hodges keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Smith wants to control but Hodges is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Hodges trying to control from half guard but Smith is working away.
Hodges throwing shots but Smith is blocking nicely.
Smith knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Hodges on the ground.

Smith controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
Smith is looking to control Hodges's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Smith avoid being mounted?
Hodges tries to pass the half guard into mount. Smith knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Smith tries to get to full guard but Hodges has control of the leg.
Hodges not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Hodges sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Smith defending well though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith wants to get back to full guard.

Hodges is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smith doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Hodges.
Hodges is nestled in close to Smith, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Smith is positioning himself well to prevent Hodges advancing to mount.
Hodges wants to lay and pray for a moment but Smith keeps working.
Smith is looking to escape.
Smith keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Hodges not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Hodges wants to take a breather but Smith is having none of it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Smith avoids a kick to the body.
Hodges has a takedown stuffed.
David Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dana Hodges.
Smith defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Hodges.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Smith fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Hodges manages to avoid it.
Smith lands a nice looking body shot.
Smith lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Hodges looks gassed!
Smith misses with a lunging right hand

and Hodges counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Hodges.
Hodges won't allow Smith to get back to his feet.
Smith looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hodges is one step ahead there.
Smith is adopting a defensive guard.
Hodges stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hodges trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that David Smith will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Dana Hodges's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


No joy there for Smith, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Smith throws a head kick that misses

and Hodges counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Hodges throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Smith tries to get to full guard but Hodges has control of the leg.
Hodges has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Smith wants to get back to his feet.
Hodges seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Smith wants to sweep but Hodges has passed to side control!
Smith tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Hodges wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
I wouldn't like to be where Smith is right now.
Hodges cracks Smith with a big right hand but Smith just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Smith takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Hodges.

Smith trying to remain calm as Hodges controls from the top position.
Smith wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Smith prevents Hodges from improving position.
Hodges prevents Smith from escaping the position.
Hodges trying to control the action but Smith is working from the bottom.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Hodges wants to control but Smith is keeping him busy.

Smith is trying to control Hodges's posture but Hodges avoids it.

Hodges looks up at the clock and then as Smith takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Hodges smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Smith is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Hodges looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Smith is pushing Hodges's head away, looking to escape. Hodges manages to hold on to the position though.
Hodges landing strikes.
Hodges trying to control the action but Smith is working from the bottom.
Smith is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Hodges is controlling him well.
Dana Hodges has got the better of the ground game so far.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smith is looking to regain half guard here but Hodges keeps moving and retains side control.

Dana Hodges showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


A shot to the body from Smith misses

and Hodges counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Hodges trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Hodges wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.
Hodges stops Smith from standing up.
Smith not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Smith wants to sweep here but Hodges controlling him for the moment.
Hodges working some strikes from top position.
Hodges lands a couple of digs.
Hodges scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Hodges missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Hodges won't allow Smith to sweep him here.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Hodges just content to control the position.
Smith pushes Hodges away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Hodges gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Smith is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Hodges has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Hodges has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Smith!
Smith is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Smith really wants to buck Hodges off and get back to his feet.
Hodges can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Smith is looking to escape.
Smith squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Smith tries to lock up and control but Hodges gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Hodges with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Poor strikes thrown by Hodges there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Smith avoids a series of strikes thrown by Hodges.
Hodges avoids the attempt from Smith to control.
Hodges landing strikes from the mount.
Smith tries to lock up and control but Hodges gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Hodges content just to control the position here.
Smith wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Smith trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Dana Hodges comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hodges has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
