PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Carl Williams (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gregores Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mendez has chosen Paleface- Helsinki-Shangri-La as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Carl Williams!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gregores Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Williams falls off balance throwing a combination
and Mendez counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Mendez with a lazy takedown attempt
and Williams counters with a three punch combo that has Mendez backing up. Mendez nods at Williams to acknowledge the strikes.
Mendez walks into a left hand.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Williams swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Mendez counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mendez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Williams preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Mendez is fighting to break Williams's control of his arms but Williams is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Mendez throws a big right hand that misses.
Williams wants to stand and escape but Mendez is having none of it.

Williams can't keep his opponent in guard - Mendez advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Williams is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Mendez scores with a couple of nice shots.
Mendez not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Williams is looking to improve his position.
Mendez thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Williams's head.
Williams is not content to let Mendez control the position.
Williams keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Williams is trying to escape back to his feet but Mendez uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Mendez is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Williams is concentrating on defense, preventing Mendez from advancing position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mendez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Williams swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Mendez pushes down on Williams's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Mendez working over Williams with some ground and pound. Williams looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Mendez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Williams regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Mendez.
Williams is pulling down on Mendez's head. It's preventing any offense from Mendez, at least for the moment.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That was a close round but I would say that Carl Williams will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Mendez is nestled in close to Williams, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Mendez is working for a submission of some sort.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Williams lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Mendez!
Mendez is in all sorts of trouble here.

Williams throws a right and a left that Mendez avoids nicely.
Williams tries to bum rush Mendez with a series of wild strikes but Mendez uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

and Williams counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Mendez!
Williams wants to control the pace but Mendez is squirming around nicely.
Mendez tries to reverse the position but Williams maintains control.

Williams stands up from mount. Strange move.
Williams throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Mendez sees it coming and avoids it easily.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Williams is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Mendez pulls his head out easily.

Williams is trying to stand.

Mendez looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Mendez is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

That was a close second round but I would say that Carl Williams will probably get the nod.
That's time! Williams's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Williams is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Mendez's half guard.

Williams decides to return to a standing position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Williams scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Williams clobbers Mendez with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
A big left from Mendez misses.
Williams shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Williams tries to clinch up but Mendez circles away and keeps his distance.
Williams stalks Mendez and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Mendez's face. Mendez staggers backwards, shaken.
Williams throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Williams looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Mendez!

Williams stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Mendez throws a left and a right that both miss

and Williams holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Williams tries to break free but Mendez pushes him back against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mendez has Williams pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Williams manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Williams lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Mendez backwards.

Williams breaks from the clinch.
Williams throws a nice looking combination but Mendez bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Nice takedown defense from Williams. No joy for Mendez on that attempt.

Mendez doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Williams counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Mendez's guard now.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Williams stands and steps away. Mendez gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Williams throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Mendez.
Mendez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Williams tries to avoid it but Mendez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Williams to the ground. Williams escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mendez takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.

Mendez is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Williams is aware though and is defending well.

Mendez has his foot on Williams's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Williams works his way back into a safe position though.
Carl Williams is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Mendez is working an open guard so Williams takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Williams is in trouble now - Mendez has advanced to mount!

Gregores Mendez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Mendez jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Williams is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Williams and Mendez has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Well Williams has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
