PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Dreger (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Edwards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ryan Dreger!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mark Edwards!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Skip Squint and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dreger keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Edwards swats away the attempt to clinch by Dreger.
Dreger bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Dreger shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Edwards manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Dreger accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Dreger has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Dreger trying to control but Edwards is working from the bottom.
Dreger trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Dreger in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Ryan Dreger.
Dreger is looking to clinch.
Edwards digs a good body shot into Dreger's ribs.
Dreger misses the body punch
and Edwards counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Dreger drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.

A combination from Edwards does no damage.
Dreger tries to clinch up

and Edwards counters by moving into the clinch.
Edwards doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Edwards lands with a left to the head.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Edwards.
Edwards lands a nice uppercut.
Edwards is pushing Dreger up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Edwards misses with some punches.
Dreger tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Dreger tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Edwards smiles and moves away.

Edwards clinches up with Dreger and pushes him back against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Edwards lands with a short head shot on the inside.
Edwards digs a right hand into Dreger's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Dreger's gas tank.

Edwards lands with a short shot to the head.
Dreger lands a good knee to the midsection. Edwards won't want to take too many of those.
Edwards throws a punch but it's blocked by Dreger.
Dreger jumps guard but Edwards stands there with Dreger around his waist. Dreger gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryan Dreger. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Edwards lands a hook to the side of the head.

Dreger gets control of Edwards's arms and successfully pulls guard. Dreger will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Edwards tries to free his leg and advance position but Dreger is retaining full guard.
Edwards slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Edwards trying to control the position from guard on top but Dreger is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Dreger holds on and takes a little breather.

Edwards must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mark Edwards was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Dreger closes this distance looking for a takedown but Edwards circles away.
Dreger throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

and Dreger counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Dreger looks to land a strike but Edwards avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Dreger wants to control from the top but Edwards keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Ryan Dreger will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Dreger avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Dreger buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Edwards thows a left - swing and a miss!
Dreger darts in trying to clinch
and Edwards counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Dreger shoots in and drives through. Edwards sprawls well.
A looping hook to the body misses from Edwards. Dreger does a little dance to reset his feet.

Dreger changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Edwards looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Edwards prevents Dreger from moving into mount.
Dreger landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Edwards seems a little lost for a moment, as Dreger dominates the positioning.
You can see the frustration on Edwards's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Edwards on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

Dreger looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Dreger tries to stand but Edwards is controlling his head.
Dreger tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Dreger misses with the ground and pound.

Edwards prevents Dreger from improving position.
Dreger tries to score with some ground and pound. Edwards controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Edwards really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Dreger. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Edwards is not content to let Dreger control the position.
Edwards gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Dreger can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Edwards is looking to escape.
Edwards is working to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryan Dreger dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Edwards misses with a looping left.
Edwards stuffs the takedown.
Dreger closes the distance and clinches up with Edwards, looking for a takedown. Dreger pushes Edwards against the cage but Edwards circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Edwards defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Dreger.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryan Dreger. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Edwards ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Dreger closes the distance but Edwards moves to the side
and Edwards counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Edwards throws an overhand right that lands on Dreger's shoulder, as Dreger tries to avoid the shot.
Edwards moves into range and connects with a jab.
The crowd cheers as Edwards lands an impressive looking overhand right. Dreger doesn't seem phased though.

Dreger staying out of range there.
Dreger tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Edwards moves into the clinch.
Edwards lands a body punch in the clinch.
Dreger is working for takedown but Edwards is calmly controlling the position for now.
A head punch on the inside from Edwards fails to land.
Edwards throws a head punch that misses.
Dreger tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Edwards swings wildly with an uppercut but Dreger uses good head movement to avoid it.
Dreger blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Mark Edwards has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Edwards digs a right hand underneath Dreger's ribcage. Dreger let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
A head punch on the inside from Edwards fails to land.

Dreger has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Edwards uses from the top position.

Edwards engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Edwards is looking to advance position but Dreger has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Dreger tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Dreger throwing strikes here but Edwards is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Dreger wants to finish this one by submission but Edwards is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Dreger.
Edwards keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Edwards can do anything to dispel that myth.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Edwards wants to hold on but Dreger pushes him away.
Dreger looking to control but Edwards is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Dreger prevents Edwards from getting the reversal.
Dreger looking to control and managing it successfully.
Dreger thowing shots but they're missing.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mark Edwards comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Dreger has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
