PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Romulo Correa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Fontana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fontana has chosen Queensryche - Silent Lucidity as his entrance music. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Romulo Correa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Fontana!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Correa misses with a body punch
and Fontana cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Correa takes one to the side of the head.
Correa moves to clinch but Fontana breaks away
and Fontana cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Correa throws a head kick that misses.
Correa throws a head kick that misses
and Correa takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Correa slips a straight right by Fontana.

Fontana changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Correa looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Fontana decides to stand back up. Fontana steps back and let's Correa get back to his feet.
Correa takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Correa looks to score with a jab to the body but Fontana is just out of range.
Fontana takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Fontana throws an off balance right hand
and Correa counters with an inside leg kick.
Fontana throws a lazy right hand but Correa sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Correa fails with the takedown
and Fontana counters with a good low kick that Correa was not able to check.
Fontana throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Fontana connects with an inside leg kick.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Fontana throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Fontana throws a lazy right hand but Correa sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Correa throws a lazy body kick
and Fontana counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Correa misses with a takedown attempt

and Fontana counters with a takedown into side control.
Fontana scores with punches from side control.

Fontana has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Fontana shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Correa manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Fontana stands up from Correa's guard - Fontana perhaps looking for a knockout.

Fontana works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Correa defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Fontana.
Correa darts in trying to clinch
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Fontana throws a lazy body kick
and Correa counters with a big head kick but Fontana shrugs it off.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Correa throws a lazy head kick
and Fontana counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Correa throws a series of strikes that have Fontana backpedaling.
Fontana shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Correa as he jumps to the side.
Fontana scores with a nice strike.
Correa works over Fontana's head and body with a nice combination.
Fontana is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Correa had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

and Fontana counters with a nice double leg into side control. Correa won't be happy with that.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Fontana stands up and we're back to a striking position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Fontana dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Fontana shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Fontana was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Correa is trying desperately to improve position.
Fontana controlling the pace for now.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Steve Fontana hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Correa wants to clinch but Fontana slips to the side
and Fontana counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Correa throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Romulo Correa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Correa tries a head kick but it misses.
Nice sprawl there from Correa as Fontana shoots in.
Fontana scores with a head kick.
Fontana throws a leg kick but Correa sees it coming and moves out of range.

Fontana rushes Correa and presses him up against the cage.
Correa can't break the clinch.
Fontana prevents Correa from breaking the clinch.

Fontana tries to pull guard but Correa holds him up against the cage and eventually Fontana drops back down to his feet.

Fontana breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Fontana throws a body kick, spinning off balance
and Fontana takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Correa throws a sloppy head kick
and Fontana counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Correa misses with a head kick.
Correa misses with a body punch
and Fontana counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Fontana avoids a kick to the body.
A low kick from Fontana is predictable there
and Correa counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Fontana is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Correa fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Fontana tries to close the distance and clinch but Correa swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Fontana throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Correa on the side of the head.
Steve Fontana seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Fontana throws a leg kick that is checked
and Correa counters with a big head kick but Fontana shrugs it off.
A slow jab from Fontana misses its intended target.
Fontana shoots in for a takedown but Correa shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Fontana showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Correa's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

and Fontana counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Correa can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Fontana controls the pace.
Fontana slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Fontana decides to stand back up. Fontana steps back and let's Correa get back to his feet.
Nice defenses there by Correa.
Correa throws a sloppy head kick and Fontana moves out of range easily.

Fontana fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Correa avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Fontana has a takedown stuffed.
Fontana throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Romulo Correa has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Fontana gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Fontana breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Fontana shoots in and drives through. Correa sprawls well.
Romulo Correa has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steve Fontana.
Fontana changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Correa tries to avoid it but Fontana manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Correa to the ground. Correa escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Fontana drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Fontana has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Steve Fontana is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

and Fontana counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Correa!

Steve Fontana comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Fontana has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
