PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Mark Dai (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Tennant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). David Tennant told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mark Dai!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, David Tennant!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Paulo Santos and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Dai throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Tennant was covering up waiting for the punch and Dai finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Tennant utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Tennant keeping moving, preventing Dai from controlling successfully.
Tennant avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Dai with a flurry of punches that miss.
Dai throws a strike but Tennant rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Dai knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Tennant on the ground.
Tennant wants to control from the top but Dai keeps moving.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Dai is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Dai wants to lay and pray for a moment but Tennant keeps working.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dai is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Tennant wants to get up but he can't break Dai's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Tennant has gone for a leg lock! Dai slips out almost immediately though and dives into Tennant's guard.

Dai thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Tennant's head.

That's time! Dai's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Dai changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Tennant looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Dai manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Tennant manages to get himself to full guard.

Dai has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Tennant off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Dai feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Dai seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Dai accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Tennant can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Dai controls the pace.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Dai has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
David Tennant has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Mark Dai.
Tennant throws a sloppy head kick and Dai moves out of range easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mark Dai showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Dai has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
