The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
duran shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts velasquez as he jumps to the side.
duran fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but velasquez avoids it really well and circles away.
velasquez fails with an attempt to clinch.
velasquez should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

duran tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and velasquez counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in duran's guard now.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
velasquez is working to get back to half guard.

duran lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

velasquez got a little sloppy there for a moment and duran has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, velasquez has managed to get both his arms back between duran's legs - danger averted.

duran can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as velasquez is looking to escape.
duran jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… velasquez is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by velasquez and duran has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
tristan duran overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
duran wants to lay and pray for a moment but velasquez keeps working.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to tristan duran.
