Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Acelino POPO!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mitsuyo Maeda!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Felipe Paraventi and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
POPO doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Maeda counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
POPO scores to the head and body with a nice combination!


It looks like Mitsuyo Maeda has been cut.
POPO scores with a nice strike.
POPO throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Maeda counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
POPO swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Maeda.
POPO has his takedown stuffed
and Maeda counters with a stiff right hand.
POPO scores with a crisp jab that stopped Maeda in his tracks.
POPO feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Maedas jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Maeda looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for POPO!

Maeda tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
POPO really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
POPO wants to control but Maeda is having none of it.
Maeda sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Maeda avoids the attempt from POPO to control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
You get the feeling that POPO really doesn't like being in this position too much.

POPO is looking to improve his position but Maeda isn't that keen on the idea.

Maeda tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
POPO is trying to reverse the position but instead Maeda has taken his back - oops!
Maeda lands with a hammerfist to the side of POPO's head.
Maeda is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
POPO manages to reverse the position and now he's in Maeda's guard. Nice work there by POPO.
POPO stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maeda swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mitsuyo Maeda was stalling too much, according to the referee.
POPO shoots and misses

and Maeda counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for POPO!
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Acelino POPO. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Maeda controlling the position easily from mount.
POPO tries to buck Maeda off but he can't manage it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! POPO's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Maeda misses with an uppercut

and POPO counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by POPO.
POPO trying to control the position from guard on top but Maeda is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
POPO tries to free his leg and advance position but Maeda is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
POPO works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Maeda is pressing down on POPO's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Maeda working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from POPO.
POPO pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Maeda is keeping the position for now.
POPO is working hard here to advance position.

POPO trying to control the position from guard on top but Maeda is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

POPO has gone for a leg lock! Maeda slips out almost immediately though and dives into POPO's guard.
Maeda stands and throws POPO's legs to the side, diving into side control.
POPO is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Maeda off and has taken his back!

Maeda wants to escape the position.

POPO working for a choke but Maeda reverses nicely into POPO 's guard.
POPO is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
POPO wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Maeda won't allow POPO to sweep him here.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Maeda sitting in guard here, content to control.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Acelino POPO wasn't doing enough on the ground.
POPO lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Maeda takes one to the chin there.
Maeda misses with an uppercut
and POPO cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
POPO throws an ugly left hook that misses

so Maeda counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
POPO wants to control but Maeda passes easily into half guard.
POPO gets full guard.
POPO is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Acelino POPO will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Mitsuyo Maeda's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

POPO is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Maeda frees his head nicely. Oh but POPO has switched to an armbar! Maeda is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
