PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Chris Newsom (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Shirwin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shirwin comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Still Standing - Hilltop Hoods kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Chris Newsom!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steve Shirwin!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Eliza Hachem and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A punch lands to the side of Newsom 's head but he takes it in his stride.
A jab from Newsom misses.

Shirwin closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Shirwin is looking to take a break and control but Newsom is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Shirwin stands up and beckons Newsom to his feet.
Newsom throws a lazy uppercut

and Shirwin counters by moving into the clinch.

Shirwin pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Newsom throws a right and a left that both miss.
Newsom misses with a double jab

and Shirwin counters with a single leg into guard. Newsom didn't expect that.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Shirwin trying to move into half guard but instead Newsom has managed to sweep!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shirwin has control of Newsom's left arm, preventing Newsom from doing any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Shirwin controls Newsom momentarily but Newsom frees himself.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Shirwin looking to hit a scissor sweep but Newsom is one step ahead there.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Shirwin trying to control the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Steve Shirwin.
Newsom throws a poor cross that misses

and Shirwin counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Shirwin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Newsom can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Shirwin controls the pace.

Newsom kicks Shirwin off and gets to his feet.
Newsom throws a combination. Shirwin tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Newsom missing with a left hand there. Shirwin was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Newsom scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Shirwin fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Newsom falls off balance throwing a combination
and Newsom takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.


It looks like Chris Newsom has been cut.
Newsom is breathing heavily.
Shirwin scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Newsom doesn't seem bothered though.
Newsom throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Shirwin decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Newsom's guard.
Shirwin trying to control but Newsom is working from the bottom.
Shirwin pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Newsom is keeping the position for now.
Shirwin throwing strikes but missing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Shirwin wants to control from the top but Newsom keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Shirwin dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Chris Newsom's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Shirwin looks to land a left hand but Newsom moved out of range nicely.
Shirwin throws a hook but Newsom blocks it.
Shirwin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Newsom but Newsom pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Newsom throws a combination that misses

and Shirwin counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Shirwin wants to control but Newsom is keeping him busy.
Shirwin is just content to waste time from the top position. Newsom takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Shirwin wants to control from the top but Newsom keeps moving.

Newsom scrambles and gets back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Shirwin avoids a punch combination nicely.
Newsom misses with a double jab
and Shirwin counters with a straight right hand.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Newsom throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Shirwin connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.


Newsom is rocked!

Shirwin gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Oh Newsom is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Shirwin's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Newsom gets tagged by a hook that puts him to sleep! Shirwin points and yells something to his unconcious foe before strutting off. Newsom wakes up just in time to hear Shirwin thank his coaches in the post fight interview.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Steve Shirwin!
