Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Hugo Chavez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Austin Aries!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Eliza Hachem and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Chavez tries to sprawl but Aries drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Chavez is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Aries pulls his head out easily.

Aries really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Chavez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Aries stops Chavez from getting back to his feet.
Aries wants to take a breather but Chavez is having none of it.

Aries seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Chavez does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Austin Aries has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Aries shoots in looking for a takedown but Chavez manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Aries's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Aries drives through and clinches with Chavez against the cage.
Aries throws a knee to the head but misses.

Aries turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Aries manages to end up in side control.
You can see the frustration on Chavez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Chavez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Aries gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Aries must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Chavez controls Aries momentarily but Aries frees himself.

Aries drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Aries jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Chavez working for a triangle but Aries defends it easily.

Aries wants to stand but Chavez has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Hugo Chavez will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Aries scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Chavez gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Chavez pushes a forearm under Aries's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Aries is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
