PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Eric Somers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Willahelm Shui (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Somers comes to the cage accompanied by Stronger by K.West. The key to victory for Eric Somers has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Eric Somers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Willahelm Shui !
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Yves DeLean and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Somers fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Shui leaves Somers with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Shui should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Somers shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Eric Somers. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Somers lands with a thumping leg kick.
Somers looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Somers shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Shui sprawls well. Shui wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Somers gets slowly back to his feet.

Somers shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Shui 's guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Shui has eaten all the pies!

Somers drops an elbow to the side of Shui 's head.
Somers is breathing heavily.
Shui is trying to get back to full guard.
Shui is trying to maintain the position but Somers is very close to passing his half guard.
Somers wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shui keeps working.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Shui can do anything to dispel that myth.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Shui is looking to control Somers's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Shui avoid being mounted?
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Shui misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Shui is looking for a sweep. Somers is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Shui is trying to maintain the position but Somers is very close to passing his half guard.
Shui really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Somers. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Somers tries to score a power double leg takedown but Shui sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Somers somewhat.
Shui wants to clinch up but Somers keeps it at a distance.

Shui attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.

Shui closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Somers takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Shui lands a nice forearm strike.

Shui remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Shui connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Somers some visible discomfort.

That was a close round but I would say that Eric Somers will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
You can see the frustration on Somers's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Shui wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Somers, who protects the arm well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Shui remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Shui tries to move into full mount but can't pass Somers's legs.
Somers is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Shui working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Shui slips a nice elbow through Somers's hands, connecting with Somers's forehead.
Well, if Shui is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Shui seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Somers does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Shui wants to stand but Somers has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Willahelm Shui has got the better of the ground game so far.
Somers is staying active underneath Shui , who seems content to just control the action from this position.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
