Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between DJ Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Scipio Africanus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, DJ Nelson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Scipio Africanus!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, George Francis and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nelson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Africanus swivels and escapes.
Africanus throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Nelson counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Nelson is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Africanus defends it well.

Nelson wants to stand up but Africanus is controlling the position.

Nelson decides to return to a standing position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jab from Africanus.
Nelson throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Nelson has his takedown stuffed
and Africanus connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Africanus misses with an uppercut

and Nelson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Africanus's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Nelson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Africanus trying to keep a closed guard but Nelson is proving a slippery customer.
Africanus avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Nelson trying to control but Africanus is working from the bottom.

Nelson controlling from the top position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Nelson trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Nelson wants to stand but Africanus has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of DJ Nelson.

Nelson shoots in and gets a takedown into Africanus's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nelson engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Nelson advances to half guard.
Nelson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Nelson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Africanus really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Nelson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Africanus is looking to get back to full guard here but Nelson has managed to pass to side control instead.

Nelson stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Africanus scores with a punch to the head.

Nelson feints and as Africanus raises his hands in defense, Nelson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Nelson content to stall in guard here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Nelson postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

DJ Nelson dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Africanus throws a left and a right that both miss

and Nelson counters with a single leg into guard. Africanus didn't expect that.
Africanus is pulling down on Nelson's head. It's preventing any offense from Nelson, at least for the moment.
Africanus controls Nelson momentarily but Nelson frees himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Nelson gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Africanus falls off balance throwing a combination
and Nelson counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Nelson connects with a leg kick. Africanus looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Africanus misses with an uppercut

and Nelson counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Africanus is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Nelson goes for a takedown in the clinch but Africanus prevents it.
Africanus is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Nelson pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Africanus tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Nelson just stands there and leans against the cage.

Africanus sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Nelson's guard.

Nelson uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Africanus swings away with a body shot that misses

and Nelson counters by clinching up.

DJ Nelson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Scipio Africanus.
Africanus is breathing heavily.

Nelson lands a takedown into guard.
Nelson throws a big right hand that misses.
Nelson forces his way into half guard.

Nelson escapes and gets back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nelson closes the distance and clinches up with Africanus, looking for a takedown. Nelson pushes Africanus against the cage but Africanus circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Nelson shoots in for a takedown but Africanus shows good takedown defense.
Africanus throws an ugly left hook that misses

so Nelson counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Nelson decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Nelson shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Nelson was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Africanus is in a horrible position here. Nelson smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Nelson get's back to his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Africanus misses with a jab to the body
and Nelson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Scipio Africanus seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Africanus swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Nelson counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Nelson closes the distance and clinches up with Africanus, looking for a takedown. Nelson pushes Africanus against the cage but Africanus circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

DJ Nelson dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Africanus misses with a lunging right hand

and Nelson counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Nelson stands up from Africanus's guard - Nelson perhaps looking for a knockout.
The fight stays on the outside here - Nelson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

and Nelson counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Africanus stops a takedown attempt from Nelson.
Nelson is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Africanus can do to turn this around?
Nelson has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Africanus avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Africanus gets control of Nelson's arms and successfully pulls guard. Africanus will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Nelson passes into half guard.
Africanus makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Africanus.
Africanus takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Nelson trying to control but Africanus is working from the bottom.
Nelson slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Nelson stands and steps away. Africanus gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Nelson shoots in looking for a takedown. Africanus tries to sprawl out of it but Nelson keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Africanus manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for DJ Nelson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Africanus thows a leg kick but Nelson checks it

and Nelson counters by moving into the clinch.
Africanus fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Scipio Africanus has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Africanus is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Nelson pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Africanus drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Nelson gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Nelson pulls Africanus into guard.
Nelson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Africanus manages to get himself to full guard.
Nelson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Africanus swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Africanus can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Nelson controls the pace.
DJ Nelson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

We're going to have a standup here because DJ Nelson wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Nelson closes the distance and clinches.
Nelson gets underhooks to prevent Africanus's takedown attempt.
Africanus goes for a takedown in the clinch but Nelson prevents it.

Nelson has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Africanus uses from the top position.

And that's the end of the fight!
DJ Nelson showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Nelson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
