PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between George Kalir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nikolaus Koskinen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that George Kalir has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily George Kalir seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, George Kalir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nikolaus Koskinen!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Russell Pearce and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Koskinen throws a left and a right that both miss
and Kalir connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Kalir shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Kalir showed some decent athleticism there.

Kalir stands up and beckons Koskinen to join him on the feet.
Koskinen falls off balance throwing a combination

and Kalir counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Kalir is trying to work for a kimura but Koskinen is defending well.
Kalir wants to pass the guard but Koskinen is defending well.
Kalir is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Koskinen is defending against the submission attempts here by Kalir.
Kalir seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Koskinen wants to get back to his feet.
Kalir is looking to take a break and control but Koskinen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Kalir looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Kalir has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Kalir decides to return to a standing position.
Kalir fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Kalir looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Kalir tries to pass the half guard into mount. Koskinen knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Koskinen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kalir. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Kalir throwing shots but Koskinen is blocking nicely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kalir is taking a breather. Koskinen says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Kalir decides to stand up.

Kalir gets the takedown into side control.

Kalir is trying to get an arm triangle but Koskinen is defending well.

Kalir stands up and beckons Koskinen to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kalir.
Koskinen looks to land a right hand but Kalir moved out of range.

Kalir shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Kalir takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kalir is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Kalir has control of Koskinen's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Koskinen regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Koskinen is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

Koskinen defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Kalir.
Kalir tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Kalir quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Kalir but it's paid off an Koskinen is forced to tap! Nice work by Kalir.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:01 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). George Kalir!
