Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Shael Connen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, James Butch!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Radbod Blank and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Connen misses with the combination.
Butch closes the distance but Connen moves to the side

and Connen counters by moving into the clinch.
Butch tries to work over Connen's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Butch trying to stall but Connen improves his position.
Connen has Butch pushed against the cage.
Connen blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Butch landing knees to the body.
Butch lands a knee to the body.
Connen tries for a takedown. No joy.
Butch working hard to break the clinch.
Butch tries to stall but Connen uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Butch wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Connen has him pressed against the cage.

Butch wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Connen keeps control of Butch as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Connen stalls.
Butch tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Butch tries to circle away but Connen has him pinned against the cage.
Connen lands with a left to the head.
Butch gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Connen.
Connen prevents Butch from breaking the clinch.
Butch drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Connen wants a takedown but no success here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shael Connen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Butch is looking to break free of the clinch but Connen has double underhooks.
Butch throws a head punch that misses.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Butch fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Connen shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Connen showed some decent athleticism there.
Connen is looking to stall here but Butch recovers full guard.
Connen has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Connen throws a strike but Butch rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Connen is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Butch not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. James Butch was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Connen thows a big elbow that misses.
Connen landing with the ground and pound.
Butch keeping moving, preventing Connen from controlling successfully.
Connen engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Connen looking to sit in guard and control but Butch gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Butch is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Connen on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Connen tries to get out of the position.

Butch stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Connen swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Connen keeping moving, preventing Butch from controlling successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by James Butch.
Butch tries to clinch up

and Connen counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Butch is looking to control Connen's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Butch avoid being mounted?
Butch is refusing to be controlled, as Connen sits in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shael Connen dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Butch moves to clinch but Connen breaks away

and Connen counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Connen is stalling here. Butch is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Connen seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Butch has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Butch tries to stand but Connen is controlling his head.

Butch is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Connen knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Butch wants to control but Connen is keeping him busy.

Connen stuck in half guard on the bottom here.
Connen prevents Butch from improving position.
Connen is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Butch asserts his dominance and retains side control.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Connen is not content to let Butch control the position.
Butch is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. James Butch wasn't active enough on the ground.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Connen turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Connen manages to end up in side control.

Connen lands a nice forearm strike.
Butch is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Connen off and has taken his back!
Connen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Butch on the ground.
Butch is looking to control Connen but Connen is wriggling around and keeping busy.
