PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Victor Hugo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Ripplestomp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Ripplestomp's choice of entrance music: Sex on Fire. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Victor Hugo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Ripplestomp!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Winston Howard and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hugo shoots for a takedown but Ripplestomp saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Hugo bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Hugo tries to advance to mount but Ripplestomp denies him.

Hugo wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Ripplestomp, who protects the arm well.

Hugo working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Ripplestomp manages to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hugo is looking for a kimura here.
Ripplestomp makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Ripplestomp.
Hugo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ripplestomp swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hugo is breathing heavily.
Hugo looking to sit in guard and control but Ripplestomp gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Ripplestomp tries to free his leg and advance position but Hugo is retaining full guard.

Hugo working for a triangle but Ripplestomp defends it easily.
Hugo can't keep his opponent in guard - Ripplestomp advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Ripplestomp trying to mount his opponent but Hugo defends it.
Ripplestomp wants to take a breather but Hugo is having none of it.

Hugo actively working from the bottom here.
Hugo is trying to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hugo taking some punishment here, with Ripplestomp in his half guard.
Hugo is not content to let Ripplestomp control the position.
Hugo gets back to full guard.
Ripplestomp won't allow Hugo to sweep him here.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Hugo shoots for a takedown but Ripplestomp saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Hugo shoots in but no luck this time.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Victor Hugo. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hugo misses with a takedown attempt - Ripplestomp sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Hugo shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Hugo was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Hugo is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Ripplestomp has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Hugo trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Ripplestomp is in all sorts of trouble here.

Hugo moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Ripplestomp has worked his arm free - good work by Ripplestomp!
Ripplestomp regains half guard.
Ripplestomp wants to control but Hugo is keeping busy.
Hugo wants to pass to mount but Ripplestomp is defending the position.

Hugo is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Ripplestomp is just riding it out for now. Hugo eventually gives up the hold.
Ripplestomp is trying to control but can't.
Ripplestomp is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Hugo's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Hugo's back!

Ripplestomp working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ripplestomp is trying to stick to Hugo's back but Hugo is turning into Ripplestomp. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Ripplestomp's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Hugo.

Ripplestomp pushes a forearm under Hugo's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Hugo is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:29 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). John Ripplestomp!
